I know bunch of you guys are campers. Im slowly buying stuff for dual purpose. Id like to get a stove thats worth a damn, but also compact. Not on a budget, but if theres an affordable one thats worth mentioning, please do.

Also, compact cooking set, if applicable, is something Id like to get. Heard about MalloMe a while ago. Not sure on quality. But, if you have any other suggestions, all ears. Spring is coming, I know it is!

The wood burner is great for upstate and mountain use where you have a ton of brush. It's a prepper thing.

Just be aware that there are places you can't burn wood, like in the Eastern High Peaks area (where most of the 46 high peaks are located).


When hiking in the Adirondacks and camping where I will be eating freeze dried food, I use a JetBoil. It boils water crazy fast. It's relatively compact, but it weighs a good amount.

If I am going to be camping where I can plan on having a fire most of the time, I just stick a small aluminum pot on the coals/fire. It takes a bit to boil, but I'm not usually in a hurry. I've used it a bunch of times, and it's still holding up very well. The bottom outside has just turned a bit black.

I have an MSR Whisperlite currently prior to it I used an Optimus 8R.

For winter camping you can't beat a liquid fuel, white gas, stove for melting snow.

I have the same one. I haven't used it yet though with wood. I did with a can of sterno and it boiled water.

So many options. It really depends on what you plan to do with it. If it is for quick, one pot meals, a mini stove may be a good choice. I have a couple, one is a MSR rocket and the other a generic. They can fit in your pocket and there are a bunch of cook kits that are designed to hold them plus a gas canister while keeping space and weight requirements down. Both are of similar design and use propane/butane mixed fuel. The MSR is around $45. The generic is around $6. I have used both, alternating for the past 2 or 3 years. Both work well with no issues. The downside is that you need the propane/butane gas canisters which are not as available as straight propane like the Coleman 1lb canister (around $4 a can). Gas for these is a little more expensive but not bad. The advantage to mixed fuel is that it burns better at higher altitudes and in colder weather. You can get them at Dick's, REI, Walmart, etc. I keep a variety of sizes. If you go this route, you can also get micro lanterns that use the same gas. Nothing really in way of maintenance or cleaning.

The Whisperlite, as mentioned above is a good stove. I have one and use it now and then. It is a little bigger so you can use bigger pots and pans on it. It is multi fuel allowing white gas, kerosene, etc. There have been different models through the years and I believe different models may allow different fuels. They use liquid fuel. An advantage is that it is easy to find fuel and some even burn regular gas. The downside is you have to worry about container leak, canisters are heavier but last longer, they are more dangerous. They must be lit on fire to warm the stove which vaporizes the gas. During startup, it is possible for the gas to spill or splash and spread flame. They cannot be used indoors. They get dirty and require a bit to clean. They run $65 and up new, $45 used.

They do not burn as hot as gas and you must keep a steady flow of wood or fuel going to them. The obvious advantage is that fuel is easy to find. You can also use alcohol burners in some (like the disposable hot tray warmers, sterno) THey can accommodate the same size pot as the Whiperlite.

If you are looking for a larger stove that is good for emergency use at home and good camping that can handle a good size pot, there are a number of propane gas stoves on the market. I keep a 1 burner coleman stove on hand at home if the power goes out and use it car camping. Its not too big but your not going to backpack with it. It can use anything from 1lb coleman propane tanks to any size BBQ tank. I love this stove. The flame adjustment is real nice. I have done full spaghetti dinners, large breakfasts and late night snacks with it.

So, multipurpose can have a lot of meanings. I have a Camp Chef 3 burner propane stove. They come in 1, 2 and 3 burner models. They use BBQ propane tanks. There are a number of accessories for them such as a grill box and reversible skillet. I use mine to boil sap in the spring to make syrup, during power outages and for trailer camping. It pretty much stays stored in the popup camper. It is great for preparing big meals for larger groups. As an example, I have cooked sausage and pepper on the skillet (which takes up 2 burners) while boiling corn for 12 people. It is a true camp stove. This stove is BIG, has legs and hoses. You are not going to backpack this puppy but, it is great for tailgating where you have some room to setup. Setup takes all of 5 minutes.

I picked up a backpack grill after reading a survivalist series. It is a little heavy but makes a good mini club. I have used it to wood fire cook trout while out fishing. The Pocket Grill Not extremely practical and a pain to assemble but man, the trout was good.

I have a variety of stoves, and which one that I carry depends upon the destination and the fuel that will be available. In the Summer, if I'm car camping I use a Biolite stove, which burns solid fuels and it'll also charge my electronics, but it is heavy. When I'm in foreign lands I'll carry a MSR XGK, because it'll burn almost any liquid fuel. Otherwise, I use a trusty Coleman dual fuel stove that'll burn white gas, or unleaded gas. If I'm going lightweight I have some small propane canister stoves, or an alcohol stove. Oh yeah, we have a kerosene stove that my wife prefers, but it's used mostly when the power is out and we don't have the woodstove fired up.

Im liking the wood burning style. No canisters to deal with. These would be for boiling water or simple dishes...no proteins. Im liking that ohuhu. Since ill be in the woods, should be easy to keep going. Im not too worried about speed of cooking, so I dont need a premium stove.

The solo stoves look nice, even have special ss pots. Pricey though. If its worth it, I could just go that way. But if a $19 stove will hold up just as well, the choice is obvious.

I have made one. It costs nothing, works very well, super compact, zero chance of a mechanical part breaking, and uses inexpensive alcohol available reallly anywhere. I managed to find a tiny Tupperware container for it to fit into. It is slower certainly than something burning propane but it will boil a small pot of water--enough for a cup of coffee for example.

This really comes down to what you are getting the stove for. If you are multi-day hiking (not car camping or party-camping), weight is everything. For multi-day hikes the butane/butane propane canister stoves work great along with freeze dried foods. You will have boiling water in a few minutes, and food in your famished belly in 10-15 minutes. Since it weighs 3.9 oz, when hiking with others we always make sure we have a couple stoves for two or three (or more) people. I posted a link to the Amazon generic version which is a couple $ more than on ebay, but you can get it with prime shipping.

You cant go wrong with a basic Colman duel fuel

Thats too bulky. Mainly need a water boiler. Those have made full breakfasts for 4 people.
Forgot about sterno. Their stoves seem to work good with wood. I will be buying multiple stoves.

As with stoves, what is the main use? If you go with one of the mini stoves, this kit works great Pinnacle Dualist Ultralight Cookset - Cooking Kit | GSI Outdoors The stove and small to medium gas canister fit inside making for a compact cook kit.

I carry a sierra cup all the time. Amazon.com : Stainless Steel Sierra Cup : Camping Cups : Sports & Outdoors While not a "mess kit" I find I use it more than anything else. You can cook in it as well as use it as a bowl/plate/cup. Great for a quick cup of coffee or soup. The only negative is that it does not insulate well so things do not stay hot for long.
