Can I bring NY pistols to a NJ range?

I'm interested in taking some friends to shoot pistols. I cannot do so in New York since they do not have permits.

I'd like to go to a range in New Jersey. I've tried to find out what the NJ laws are regarding taking pistols to a range. I can only find NJSP regulations that refer to keeping firearms and ammunition locked and inaccessible while in the car.

Does anyone know if pistols from New York can legally be taken to a range in New Jersey if they are transported in accordance with NJSP regulations?

According to NJ law 2C:39-5 it is illegal to possess a hanggun without the necessary permit or Firearms ID card felony 3rd degree. Max 5years in prison.

There is an exemption in the gun possession charge while in your own home, at the range, and going directly to/from the range. Some folks have interpreted this exemption as you cannot even stop by for refreshments with locked up guns in your car. IMHO you guys are better off renting pistols at a NJ range (no NJ permit is needed for this), or taking your pistols to PA instead.

Phaser do you have a CT license? If so, go to Wooster Mountain in Danbury, Ct. I take my wife there to shoot. You don’t need a license to possess. It’s a nice outdoor range that’s less than 45 minutes away from you. I believe it’s about 25 bucks for the whole day per person.

I can second Wooster though I still think it's weird that the parking lot is right next to (instead of elsewhere like maybe, I dont know BEHIND) the range. In fairness there's a good bit of distance but I did find it weird shooting parallel to the parking lot.

I guess I'm going to have to get a Connecticut permit and take them up there.

CT non-resident permit is easy to get, just takes time. You have to call the State Police and have an application mailed to you. Be sure you submit with perfect fingerprint cards - mine went through no problem, my wife's took 3 tries.

I have to see if I can find my NRA Live Fire course certificate. If I can't I'm going to have to pay to get that done...again. Dammit.

You can carry a handgun into NJ without a permit between your home and tge range with no stops. Completely legal but make one stop, say at a drive thru, you can be hit with a felony. Both the law and case law support this. It is mentioned in the case where the guy was moving between his home and another home with hollow point ammo

Here too in NY. My dad is a Florida resident. I took him the other day to shoot my Ruger PC Carbine. Once back there nobody bothers you. He somehow really liked the Ruger LCP 2 that I couldn’t let him shoot and said that he was sold on buying one.

I’ve shot USPSA with non-NY residents. I’ve only shot USPSA in NYC.

A CT permit is the way to go. Only takes about 90 days. Just make sure the finger print cards are clear. They love to reject them.
