Can you identify this old revolver?

Can anyone identify the make and model of this old revolver? It’s my friend’s father’s (who is 80 years old) and he says he got it from his grandfather so I’d imagine it’s quite old. It’s a 7 shot 22 short. He said he thought it was a Colt but he wasn’t sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated! IMG_6232.jpeg IMG_6231.jpeg

Maybe a Hopkins and Allen or Forehand Wadsworth. Cylinder take down rod is much longer and differently shaped than most other manufacturers or examples I see in online photos, but it could also be a replacement. Also see a lot of examples using birds head grips. Probably best to send photos to an auction house so identify this suicide special.

Thank you for the comments. These seem very similar but slightly different. The takedown rod release seems different to any of the ones I’ve been able figure online. Might there be identifying info under the handle scales? Does this pistol look like it was manufactured in the late 1800’s? Thanks again! :)

I'm thinking closer to mid 1800s than later 1800s.

That's a neat looking piece of history. Certainly has seen it's time.

Just looking at it, reminds me of how simple things were, but lots of attention to detail was back then.

If I absolutely had to take a guess I would guess Allen and Wheelock although they made hexagonal barrels. Maybe though, the gun had various work done to it. Parts swapped, finishes done etc. The grip could have even been swapped out because it looks like most of these types of guns had rounded butts. The takedown is odd too. It seems like being bent up like that and that long would make it hard to unscrew. Tough to say without at least seeing a marking or something.
