Or just spark the cables together onto the tinder.
Or take the flat spring out of your windshield wipers and use it with the cables, it isn't consumable (i.e. it'll get hot enough to start the fire, but you can use it over and over again).
Really, if you've got a whole car with a charged battery, fire is not a challenge.

On top of that, how many people have pencils in their cars anymore ?
Pens, sure, probably a dozen if I dig around under the seat, but pencil ? Maybe a carpenters pencil, maybe.

Someone that has a knife and jumper cables would probably have a lighter or road flare. Possibly even... wait for it... a cell phone! Silly video.

Excellent. Take out the spring. Stretch it out just a little bit preserving as much of the coil as possible, and use that as a heating element.

I heard a pack of disposable lighters, firestarter, or a box of matches are really small, cheap, and easier to make fires with without screwing with your expensive car battery. I heard they can be put almost anywhere in the vehicle and some cars and trucks even have these small compartments called "glove boxes" where they could be stored if opening a trunk and or walking behind the vehicle were to be too much effort.

The flat spring from the windshield wiper actually works very well. I have used them as an expedient foam/plastic cutter this way before. You can regulate the temp by how far apart the clips are. The spring from a pen would probably be too small. Plus every car has a couple wiper blades

I keep a small survival kit in my car, it has a few means of starting fires , tarp,water tablets,space blanket,fleece blanket ,a first aid kit,a knife ,hatchet ,and paracord . I keep it an a small bag with a shoulder strap so i can easily take it with me it doubles as my day hike survival bag .takes up barely any space and the fleece blanket is a cover for my back seats.
I a pinch the pencil trick will work . So would a nine volt and a gum wrapper . (Prison lighter)

LOL, 12volts and cables LOL... Livingston has great post always, But first time ever I'm looking for thumbs down unlike button on his post.
When I went to CO last year, I drove for something like 15 miles without cell service. We don't usually have that issue here in the northeast, but it's issue other places. I do agree with you though. I always keep a lighter in my car.

It's an engineer thing.
Although, I know a GC that uses them a lot when doing detail work (molding and such) because it has a finer line.
