Ontario drops vaccine proof, protests persist​


WINDSOR, Ontario (AP) — Ontario’s premier announced Monday that Canada’s most populous province will lift its COVID-19 proof-of-vaccination requirements in two weeks — not because of the protests that have blocked the border and paralyzed Ottawa, he said, but because “it is safe to do so.”

The busiest U.S.-Canada border crossing, meanwhile, was open again Monday after police removed the last of the protesters who had bottled up the Ambassador Bridge for nearly a week in a demonstration against Canada’s virus restrictions. But the larger truck-borne protest in the capital, Ottawa, persisted as city residents seethed over authorities’ inability to reclaim the streets.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said that on March 1, the province will drop its requirement that people show proof of vaccination to get into restaurants, restaurants, gyms and sporting events. A surge of cases caused by the omicron variant has crested in Canada.

Canadian Armed Forces says both members were part of the elite Joint Task Force 2 unit​


Two members of the military's elite special forces unit are under investigation for their alleged involvement in the convoy protest in Ottawa, according to a statement from the Department of National Defence.

Maj.-Gen Steve Boivin, commander of the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command, said the first case came to the attention of senior leaders on Feb. 1, and the other on Feb. 10.
Both members were already in the process of being released from the Canadian Armed Forces and were supporting the protest "in some form or another," he said.

A source within the special forces, who spoke on condition of confidentiality because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said the two members are part of Joint Task Force 2, also known as JTF2, a special elite unit working in counter-terrorism, protective services and special reconnaissance.
"The Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM) does not condone its members supporting and/or actively taking part in causes that jeopardize the apolitical imperative associated with their functions," Boivin said in a statement.

Canada cracking down on crowdfunding, crypto​

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said that the blockades were harming Canada's reputation "around the world," as well as Canada's economy.

Freeland also announced that they would broaden the scope of anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist tools, to include crowdfunding platforms. Crypto currencies will also fall under this scope.

"As of today, all crowdfunding platforms... must register with FinTrac [Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada], and they must report large and suspicious transactions to FinTrac."

They will also authorize seize providing financial services where the institution suspects that "an account is being used to further the illegal blockades and occupations."
