You would have to have a screw loose to be in a kayak at this point in the season without both a PFD and exposure protection like a wetsuit. Even the more so if you were tripled up.

last time I was in a Canoe .. i was at NAVY school in Great Lakes ..
went out of the harbor and pass the breaker wall .. with 2K worth of camera gear alone to get some photos ..
what a ride i had 2 foot waves coming and was paddling my ass off so i didn't broadsided ..
i didn't get any photos .. i was to busy with the oar lol
i was like fk i messed up .. but kept my cool and made it back

I'm a good swimmer, but I still wear a PFD when out kayaking, just because I feel it's the right thing to do for myself. Anyone else, they can do what they want.
Heck, I wear my wetsuit kayaking up north unless the water temp is 80F+. Don't need to be playing games with hypothermia.
IIRC you need a wetsuit at 50F-70F and anything under 50F you really need a drysuit.

My two buddies swamped a canoe in Jamaica bay about 5 years ago the day after a blizzard in February. No pdf full coveralls and one had a backpack on full of tools. They were headed to a mooring where my one friend had a sailboat he was fixing up.
Friend one was able to get to another moored boat, was picked up by a NYPD boat. He was looking for a pen on the boat to write a farewell to his family. The other was plucked out by a helicopter. Both body temps in the mid -low 80s. Almost lost two great friends that day because they thought they were invincible. Only reason help was called is because a dog walker saw them go down and called 911. Both agreed it was the scariest moments of their lives.

All IPhones are waterproof now. I dropped mine in lake earlier ice fishing and it took me 45 minutes to hook the case and and reel it in. It still works to this day and it must have been 3 years ago now. It was in about 6 feet of water. It didn’t charge for a bit because the battery was cold and it drained the battery quickly. The case was waterproof but the charging port hole had broken off.

Update, it seems it was 3 men in the canoe in a pond. All 3 went in the water. 2 stayed with the canoe and awaited rescue. One made a break for it and succumbed.
