Oddly enough, and according to the NYS DEC "YOU MAY OPEN CARRY AS LONG AS YOU ARE **ACTIVELY** HUNTING ~~~~ya, this state couldn't make a law more confusing. Everyone I know that has a Pistol permit open carries while hunting in the north country. Im not sure I would try that in the southern tier, but no one has been arrested for open carrying while hunting.......I don't want to be the test case.

From what I have gathered over the years, you can open carry your handgun as long as your handgun is your primary firearm used in the hunting. Meaning you're not carrying a long gone.
Learned something new, you may not carry a handgun during regular archery or muzzleloading season's although you can carry a handgun if you're using a bow during regular deer season.

I have tried to find the rule. It's is there somewhere with the law that says "if you lean your loaded firearm against the outside of your vehicle, you're driving with a loaded firearm" I'll wait til 9am and call the DEC region 8 office and see what they say.
BUT lets think about this for a minute: It is ILLEGAL to open carry ANY FIREARM in New Yorkistan......except when hunting. You OPEN CARRY a rifle, thats legal, correct, why would it be illegal to open carry a handgun while hunting ??? If you go by the letter of the <choke> law. as soon as you pull your *concealed* handgun to shoot a animal......now you could be charged with menacing? correct?
where does the stupidity end.....other than the state border

Pretty sure that if the handgun is your main and only hunting tool you may carry it OC just like you would your rifle. But if you have a rifle in your hand and you carry a pistol than a pistol needs to be concealed.

True during special archery season. But normal hunting season you may use a bow or rifle which then you are allowed to possess a handgun.
I kind of look at this through pretty clear eyes.
If I am hunting with a pistol; in other words, my handgun is my primary killing machine; I can actually carry said gun in my hand as I hunt. That is as Open Carry as it can get.

I hear you. It makes no sense whatsoever to conceal a handgun while hunting. NYers of old who drafted the Sullivan Act were just as stupid as the ones who drafted the Unsafe Act who forgot to provide exemptions for law enforcement and armed guards.
Being that I'm a law abiding citizen, when hunting in the woods with a handgun, I use this ingenious piece of equipment.
5 shots and still holding up! They are available on Amazon in coyote brown for maximum concealment.

You can carry a center fire pistol while hunting in both rifle and shotgun zone. I only unload my shotgun when near a road or vehicle. Pistol can stay loaded. 357 minimum for deer carry.

My recollection may be incorrect, and I'm certainly not going to spend the time looking up the law at this time. There was a thread at the other site, and the environmental conservation law was quoted. Last I knew you can't carry a SideArm, during hunting season. It might be specific hunting seasons, but still.

Apparently it is muzzle loading and bow hunting season you can't legally carry a pistol. That is where I got it from.
And now I was just reminded you can't have a loaded rifle or shotgun while driving and ATV. So ridiculous.

Actually no this is not correct. As long as you have your firearms license you can carry during normal hunting season. But you cannot carry a handgun during muzzleloading or bow hunting seasons.
True about the ATV including anything that is motorized and moves under its own power.
Keep in mind do not lean your loaded fire arm A.K.A rifle against any motorized vehicle. It will then be considered on or in the motor vehicle same as if you had it loaded inside the vehical.

I carry when hunting. Sometimes I carry a .22 in a drop leg holster. Sometimes I carry my M&P9c in an OWB holster. Other times I carry my .44 mag Super Redhawk in a bandolier holster.
It all depends on the season, what I feel like hunting, and my mood at the time. This is all on private land, in central/western NY. The DEC can go screw off with their "leaning a firearm against a vehicle" and other ridiculous laws. I understand the intent behind not letting people shoot out of vehicles, but not being able to use the 4 wheeler as a rest when sighting in my rifle is a little ridiculous.

Any input on a drop leg holster NF?
I have no idea what model one I have. I've had it for 5 or 6 years now. I remember it being a fairly cheap one. Unfortunately, my red dot won't fit inside the holster. Really, that is the biggest drawback. Make sure you're wearing a sturdy belt or the pistol can try and pull your pants down. I take it along so I can shoot the squirrels while hunting for deer. I'd love to find one that will let me keep the red dot on. It's easy to draw the pistol from.
And, I do feel kind of bad ass when I've got the .22 on my leg and the .44 on my chest

I grew up with that mentality and honestly it very well could be a correct one. I really am just looking at exploring something new. A cool added plus would be a deer coming in range of the pistol although because of my skill level I don't think I would take the shot but once a again why limit yourself.
I usually load up the .22 pistol with reduced powder loads. They're quieter and I can shoot squirrels when I get really bored.

I don't recall anything from the DEC website saying OC was legal in any instance but also have never had an issue with it. It's a bit hard to conceal a 15" Encore no matter what you're wearing. Where I live the LEOs and ENCON are really easy going. I've ran into SP while OCing my Encore and 686 or P99, never an issue. I suspect only because it's hunting season. I've always had a second handgun for coyotes or fox. Now my Encore is in ML form so much easier to grab my P99 than have to reload the Encore again. Even out coyote hunting I OC my P99. If I get a yote coming in from behind from the woods it's going to be so much easier to acquire my target with the P99 than to find it in the scope, and usually you're not going to get time with the rifle. I don't hunt with a scatter gun.
Probably best to get to know your local LEOs.
edit: Also, during bow season, get to know your local ENCON officer. Some times they will overlook you carrying a sidearm if you are carrying it for coyotes.

Sigh. I have stated this so many times, I won't do it again after this. The law according to Firearms and Weapons Laws, Thomas and Chamberlin, Looseleaf Law Publications, Inc.: Penal law only permits concealed carry of handguns, however, that law is not enforced on hunters and usually (this is the nebulous part) on fishermen and hikers. The prohibition on loaded long guns in motorized vehicles is DEC law. So, bow season excepted, the law requiring concealed is not enforced for hunters.
Personal note: I have open carried while hunting and encountered several State Police as well as Encon officers for over 50 years and not one has asked for my pistol license, but each one asked for my hunting license.

I carried when we were in Colorado, but that was because I was thinking about more than deer and elk coming up on me. Used that OWB holster I asked about in the gear forum, was perfect. In a pinch, just threw my jacket over it. Boom, instant conceal. Now I know Colorado and NY are completely different, but I'd treat NY the same. I'm on private land and I don't care. I'm hunting and I'm bringing something with me as a just in case.

Some times when I still hunt and walk through an area that is to thick to pull up my rifle, I will sling my long gun and carry my .357

I carry my SRH in a shoulder rig while rifle hunting just in case I were to get a chance at a shot with it. It hasn't happened yet but it will! I don't trust my aim with it past about 50 yards.
