This thread is for those interested in cartridges and learning about their history, characteristics and use.
All we have to do is to post the name of the caliber, a picture or two and a description of the characteristics, history and intended use. It doesn't have to be too long but also don't make it too short.
If a cartridge is of special interest to a group we can later create a separate thread to give a detailed dissection of that specific cartridge and caliber.

If you can please provide some basic attributes about the cartridge. So cut and paste this example
and fill it out accordingly to be able to classify the cartridge.

358 WINCHESTER

The 358 Winchester is nothing but the 308 winchester necked up to 35 caliber. It uses the same
headspace as the parent 308 but it can take a heavier bullet and propel that bullet to very decent
speeds using faster powders. Typical loads use 200 to 250gr bullets that are top performers when
dealing with large game. The 358 Winchester can launch a 225 gr bullet at 2550 fps from a light
and compact hunting rifle. This put similar energy and more momentum at 100 yards than the
308 Winchester with 180gr at the muzzle making the cartridge a more powerful round at the average
ranges we normally hunt. It is a cartridge suitable for all north american game including the largest
and most dangerous game like Grizzly bears. It also makes a nice and simple all around deer
and brush hunting round. A compact package that hits really hard.

There are several advantages to this cartrige for serious hunting:

A) It is economical and easy to reload. 308 brass is easly necked up and it is plentiful and affordable.

B) 35 caliber bullets have a proven record for fast kills. The 35 caliber is a good way to provide
heavy thumping capabilities yet bullets are still very efficient in the air. (ballistic coefficient)

C) It fits inside a small 308w action yet it provides lots of power w/o the need to get into large
actions or magnums.

D) One can find many suitable alternatives to shoot in lerver actions. This is a popular round for
the amazing Browning BLR.

E) One can load inexpensive 357 pistol bullets for practice and hunting. It makes a very efficient
white tail round.

284 WINCHESTER

The 284 Winchester is an often overlooked cartrige but it has some very nice characteristics.
The case is a tad longer than a 308 winchester at 2.170" (vs. 2" of the 308), it uses the same
bolt head (.473) diameter although it is a tad wider at the base (.50"). This makes the rim
a bit rebated but at the same time it gives a case capacity similar to a large action cartrige
like the 270 winchester.
The case is so good that it became a donor for a very popular 6.5mm wildcat that is the
6.5-284 norma. The cases are very strong specially those made by Norma and interestingly
the 6.5 cases are used to be necked up to the original 284 configuration as the 7mm bullets
offer superior performance than the 6.5 ones.

The 284 cartrige can propel 140 to 160gr 7mm bullets to 3,000 and 2,900fps respectively and
depending on rifling and barrel length obviously.

This makes the 284 an excellent cartrige and one step above the also very nice 7mm/08 and
gives more power while being able to carry a light short action cartrige to hunt medium and
medium-large game.
It also hits like lightining bolt when loaded with 120gr solid bullets like the Barnes 120gr TTSX
that is an excellent deer and hog bullet when driven above 3200fps.
Some people might choose this over the 280 Remington in order to keep the short action
and a more compact rifle vs. the 280.

Another advantage is the strength of the brass that along with the 35 degree angle shoulder
of the 284 makes the brass last a long time.

With long bullets such as the Berger 168gr VLD or the new Hornady ELD this cartrige is a
very well balanced long range cartrige. Regarding this, the cartrige the would need additional
length in the magazine and most popular sort action will not be able to get the most
of this cartridge for this type of use. But there is an opportunity that this the Mauser 98 type
of action that is a tad longer than the typical short actions but smaller and more compact
than the long actions. So this might be the perfect caliber for the next Mauser action project.

The extra length of the longer magazine allows the use of the longest bullets w/o loosing powder
or running over the long ogive of the long rage bullets due to bullets being seated too deep.

In a Mauser action (or long one obviously) the 284 can propel a 7mm 182gr VLD bullet at
2,900fps when using long barrels and proper powder charges.

This is in fact a match winning round for long range shooters that produces better ballistics
and longer barrel life than the 6.5mm version of it.

30 HERRET

The 30 HERRET is a 30 caliber rimmed wildcat cartridge based on the .30-30 Winchester, shortened, necked back and with a sharper shoulder angle. Developed for use in pistols with barrels as short as 10 inches (25 cm), it develops the same power as a .30-30 with greater efficiency and less muzzle blast when used in these short barrels. It has been a reliable and popular choice for silluete pistol shooting using the popular Thomson Center pistols.

The 30 Herret also makes a great small caliber for a light carbine when loaded with 125gr-150gr hunting bullets that work great in deer, hogs, mountain
goat, etc... 125gr is about the bare minimum in 30 caliber to hunt medium animals but one could also use it with 110gr fast bullets to hunt varmints.
The herret has the capability to bring a 125gr 30 caliber bullet with a sd a tad below .2 at around 2,200fps at 200 yards that is the cut off point to assure fast clean kills with light for caliber 30 cal. bullets.

There is one variant of the herret that is rimless that can be easily formed using 6.8SPC brass necked up to 30 caliber. This variant uses the same
reamer and dies as the 30 herret, the only different is that it can be used to be fed by small auloading carbines like the popular AR, mini-14, AK, etc...

This AR bound variant has lately given a renewed interest due to its capability to shoot 125gr bullets at 2600fps from a 16" AR15 carbine.

It is called the 30HRT or Herrett Tactical Rimless is a wildcat cartridge based on the 30 Herrett of TC contender fame. But rather than forming cases from rimmed 30-30wcf you form cases from 6.8spc (remember 30rem or 30-30rimless is the parent case for SPC). While this cartridge is a wildcat with no factory ammo or SAAMI pressure spec it's a somewhat domesticated wildcat in that there is plenty of load data and reloading dies readily available from most major manufacturers. Remember the AR version can operate at a higher pressure.

1.580 is the length to the wall, 1.570 is trim to length. The shoulder is 30 degrees. The shorter case length I use allows all of the 125 and 130gr bullets and some 150gr bullets to be used correctly positioned in the freebore of the chamber. The barrels have the same 1 in 11.25 twist 5R rifling that the 308 barrels have. For plinking the 147gr FMJs will be cheap. The 30HRT and 30 Herrett AR will push bullets apx 200 fps faster than the 300 BLK for those intending to hunt deer and hogs. This is not the best cartridge for someone just learning to reload. Best results will be seen when the case neck is turned to a consistent thickness from mouth to shoulder. The brass needs to be sized close to the chamber size.

28.5gr 1680 behind a 125 TNT hit 2500fps out of a 16" barrel.
29.5gr 1680-apx 2570- Very accurate with 125gr Speer TNT and Hornady SST
30gr 1680=2594fps--54925psi
30.5gr 1680 =2655 --57053 psi max(meaning do not try or use more powder than this)
30.5gr 1680 is pretty much max with 125gr bullets. The 125 Sierra prohunter hit 2600+- and the 125 Nosler hit 2680 with the same charge. The Sierra has more bearing surface, may be why it was slower.

155Amax-30gr AA2200-2367fps-58272psi max-start 2 gr lower

28gr 1680-150 Nosler BT 2399fps-16" production barrel. That is a warm load but no cratering or flattening of CCI450 primers.
That is apx the same as a 24" 30-30 or 200fps faster than a 16" 30-30. I'm impressed.
The Hornady 155 Amax is the same length as the Nosler and will work.
There are a lot of bullets shorter than the Nosler that will work in this case. I think this thing would make a pretty hard hitting hog cartridge and the 147 and 149gr fmjs reduce the plinking cost. Starting the tests-16" barrel These loads are near max for one reason or another. Start 1-2gr lower and work up.

29gr Re7-149gr FMJ 2.295=2470fps Max load due to fill
30gr 1200r------------------=2440
30gr 2200-------------------=2426
31gr 2200-------------------=2510--starting to crater ...MAX LOAD
Seeing this with the 150 shows me there is no need to try 4198, N200 or 4227 with bullets near 150gr.

33gr 2200 behind a 125gr TNT at 2.295=2660. Max load due to fill, no cratering or swipes

27gr RE7 or 4198 is max fill. Both of those loads shot the 110gr TSX loaded to2.3" under an inch today. The TSXs IMO shoot better than the 125SST or 125TNT with every load I have tried.

Federal once fired brass, CCI 450 primers-10/6/15
31gr 1680, 110TSX loaded to 2.295=2678fps
32gr 1680, 110TSX loaded to 2.295=2796fps
No swipes, no craters, primers not flat. 32gr is close to max fill

The Hornady 125gr SST is not as accurate as the bullets above.

Cape buffalo have a notorious reputation as one of Africa’s Big Five game animals (which also includes the elephant, lion, leopard, and rhino). Out of the five, cape buffalo have injured the most hunters, and are widely considered the most dangerous. The .585 Nyati was designed as an alternative to the more poweful—and more expensive—Nitro Express rounds that are covered later in this list. That does not mean it doesn’t pack a punch, however. The .585 Nyati comes with a 750-grain bullet and has inspired other rounds such as the .585 Gehringer.

No. That is very reasonable. I have paid $5 a round for .375 H&H mag. I was actually equating the 585 to the .50BMG @ surplus with 3000 more foot pounds to boot!

The above was forming the nitro cases that are a lot cheaper than bertram formed brass.
And it will super easy to form even in a budget kit/ regular press. No much force is needed.
Easy to trim too.

If you have the 375 H&H then you are ready. no need for more power.

In any case to build a 585 one could use a large shank savage action with a PTG bolt head. Very strong and nice wood stocks to bed a strong affordable setup. One would need a forward double
recoil lug and bed everything well due to the massive recoil forces.

I would think in the close encounters with dangerous game there is nothing better than a large
frontal section with lots of grain but in reality a 375 like the H&H, 375 ruger or the mighty
375 Ultra Magnum will give a lot more versatility including long range hunting with 350gr bullets.

some people can actually afford, less power at the muzzle but it quickly catches up with the 50 calibers and above.

If you think about it the 358 and 375 are the last calibers that make sense from a ballistics performance stand point. 458, 50 caliber, 577, etc... they provide massive grain but they behave
like shotgun slugs. Of course with the exception of the 50 caliber bullets for the BMG and one or two in the 416 also aimed for BMG based cases.

But otherwise the 375 is the ticket. the 358 is bad ass too. 35 cal Woodleigh 310gr bullets from a RUM case is hard to argue with. It gives the versatility of any game hunting when loading mild and then pumped to include the largest animals on the planet.

I agree. Although it was a large cartridge and not that efficient in combustion by today's standards, it was really quite a revelation of the advances to come and proof that the small calibers had more advantages than disadvantages.
Isn't it funny that after more than a century we come to realize the versatility of the 6mm for a small arms caliber?
Like for example in small modern carbines we see scenarios where the 223 falls short and the 30 caliber is too slow given the limitations
and that is why 6.5, 6.8spc, etc.. do so well. The 6mm might strike the perfect balance between speed, momentum on target and overall
weight. Even by simply necking up the 223 case to 6mm (6x45 or 6TCU wildcats) we end up with a cartrige that can shoot 85gr bullets
above 2,800 fps from 18" barrels and giving an overal performance gain of 25-30%. If we take the 6.8spc II it is amazing what it does with
bullets between 90-110gr but if we take that case and put a 90gr bullet we can further increase speed and ballistic performance w/o
increasing weight. The 6.8spc excels in short barrels too but even the 6mm version puts some serious speed in 10-12" barrels.

I think the Chinese made a very smart move and instead of sticking to the 5.45x39 they developed their own 6mm version 5.8x42 for their main battle rifle that outperforms all other small caliber service rounds.
I wish we had a commercial version and actual brass wot play with it.

For the US military it would be so easy either neck up the 223 and find 2 extra grains or neck down the 6.8 and put a 80gr-85gr bullet on it.
Those would make a huge impact in ballistics and terminal performance w/o drastically increasing weight and therefore impacting the
amount of fire power a soldier or operator can carry. The nice thing about necking and beefing up a 223 version is that it would use the same bolts and magazines.

If they only had the current materials and powder and data at the time they would probably had done that and today we would still have a small and powerful 6mm little cartrige.

For a commercial round the 6mmBR has to be one of the most efficient and accurate cartridges ever devised. Still dominates in BR score competitions and with
lapua brass around one can reload amazing nr. of times given that one anneals the necks once in a while. This is a good example on how a short column cartrige with a lot less power can pair up to a the 243 winchester that is also great but also a torch barrel burning.

The 6mm PPC does also very well although it has less powder than the BR but it will run in a AR15 and AK too with the 7.62x39 bolts. It is very popular in Europe and norma and Sako provide brass, ammo and rifles. very popular with the 100-500yds BR score competition crowd.

If one reloads the 223 parent neck up for 6mm will be the most economical but you also have 6.8 and 6.5 grendel that do better than the donor themselves.

The grendel case necked down ( a tad more capacity than the PPC) with 105, 107 and 115gr bullets shoots flatter and further than the parent Grendel itself.

The 6.8 spc necked down to 6mm is another laser beam.

But for the average guy the affordability of the 6x45 and 6TCU is hard to beat. Extremely accurate too. These two I suggest to have the freebore increased to
take long range bullets w/o loosing case capacities or increasing pressure. This wildcat is so good that LesBaer has them in stock as standard configuration
along with the 223 and 308. They also make ammo although I don't know they continue or is by demand.

For out of the box with the longest bullets the 6mmBR (or 6mm PPC for smaller bolt) are hard to beat.

Sure thing. I carry this round on a glock 21 with a wolf barrel so I can talk a bit about it.

The 357 SIG was a collaboration between SIG and federal to produce a cartridge that would reproduce the performance of a 357 magnum
out of a small pistol but would work on small frame like a SIG or Glock. The case is nothing but a 40 S&W case strengthened and necked down to 9mm / 357
to be able to shoot 125gr bullets at 1500fps from a 4" barrel. It also makes a great carbine round and since it shares the same magazines
than the 40 cal all it needs is a barrel swap to upgrade.

It has the bottle neck and strength to put speeds exceeding 2000 fps that can defeat body armor where other larger and heavier calibers will fail.
For this they also make lighter solid bullets to penetrate hard barriers and windshields w/o deflection and plenty of momentum and frontal section
to do a lot of damage. 125gr bullets can deliver energy in 10mm territory w/o being too hard to control, not more snappy than a 40 cal I would say.
Most commercial makers make milder versions of the ammo so it is underrated with the exception of performance ammo makers like
Underwood that load the ammo to full power potential and a couple of other makers.

So if one wants to carry 357 magnum power with more rounds and w/o the huge weight and expense of a dessert eagle the 357 SIG is the ticket.
These attributes are the main reason why the 357 SIG is the US secret service choice over other calibers. Same thing with other special
units all around the world.

What kind of bullets are used for reloading/plinking and what is used for defensive purposes for the 357 sig? Or do people just barrel swap for plinking and shoot 40 S&W.

I also looked at Starline brass for the 357 sig and thought its was pretty reasonably priced for such a unique round.

Good. At least somebody else is tired of politics like me.

This caliber works very well with typical bulk 9mm fmj bullets like 115gr and 124gr FMJs.
But will also work with a 135gr fmj super or 147gr and also in 357 with a tad reduced load, depending on rifling too.
I just feel the heavier grain defeats a bit the purpose that is to shoot super fast and flat.
Also for practice one doesn't have to load as hot as defensive ammo so the brass and parts will last longer.
I buy bulk bullets that I share with 9mm and other 35 caliber cartriges.

I would stay away from cast and copper plated since with the high speeds of this cartridge is not a good thing plus with the
value packs I got hornady and speer fmj bullets for 9 or 10 cents each so lead or plated do not make a lot of sense from the economy stand point
neither. Buy bulk and ask for discounts. buy often too! lol

You can also load light 380 solid or fmj bullets and experience brutal speeds yet milder recoil.
Make sure you do not exceed the maximum allowed in your range since you might be putting holes through the back
stop in your range. If you cannot shoot a 357 magnum then you should not use this one unless you reload milder and
slower speeds. In a local range we are supposed to keep them below 1,500fps to avoid damage to the back stop.
I shoot average commerical that is milder and also reload. For full power defensive ammo like underwood and double
tap I go to the outside range that is dirt back stop.

For the brass I would look into once fired. Not many people reload for 357SIG so it is fairly cheap vs new brass.
I think is a bit more tricky to get started but once you get tuned in then you can crank 357 SIG for less cost than
40 caliber. I like the 40 cal too but once you try the SIG there is no going back.

I just did a search and found this. you should be able to buy 1K cases for 60 bucks or less.

Check gun-broker too. I came across a very large batch I bought years ago for $300 for government once fired brass.

Don't go and buy 20K cases. Just buy enough and give it a try make sure it is what you like. Personally I don't like to
reload nickel cases but it is just me.

BTW and in case you are looking to get into this I have a G22 with a 357 wolf barrel included (2 calibers) that I barely use. I think it was fired
twice so it like new condition.
It is the RTF law enforcement issue with tritium sights from the glock factory. I don't think they are available to civilian market anymore.
I am just throwing this out there because I have more stuff I will be able to shoot in 3 lifetimes and perhaps never too late to simplify things
a little bit.
