When you think about being out in the woods, what do you envision as a staple meal? Do you see yourself sitting by the fire roasting some fresh venison on a spit? Maybe you live in an area with a great deal of waterfowl, and you can see yourself enjoying some roasted duck? What you imagine in your mind is probably in large part dictated by the environment you live in. Wherever you live, one food that should be on your list of wild food is freshly caught fish.

I was taught early in the Army how to properly clean and cook a fish easily in the field. I did a TON of camping and fishing while I was in. I hope to get back to doing that when my daughter is a little older.

I'm thinking that depending how far into survival I am, I'm going to eat a lot more of that fish than the fillet's. Glad we were taught how to seal them. Oh yeah, walleye cheeks are the best!!!

Right o marylou, I'd be gutting, scaling and roasting that fish and eating pretty much everything there except the bones.
By the way, boiled fish heads make an excellent and highly nutritious soup. Add some foraged wild onion , sweet grass and morels and you have yourself a fine stew for another meal.

I have always carried a 6 foot cast net in my survival bag. It takes up almost no room, weighs almost nothing and can be used for other things if needed, cordage, gill net, fishing line......
Once you learn to throw it, the fish dont stand a chance. The nice thing is you can catch spooked fish and fish that wont bite. They dont know what hit them.

Life is a lot easier filleting a fish if you don't cut all the way through at the tail. Keep the last little bit attached at the tail, flip it over, and skin it that way.
