We had quite a few feral dogs in the area when we first moved here 30 years ago. I saw one about as big as an Irish Wolfhound checking out the llama my neighbor was raising. Large square muzzle, white, brown, grey, yellow blotches of shaggy fur. Looked very fit and well fed.
I've seen coyotes that look like western wolves, huskies, and German Shepards. Some have had the long skinny nose and long legs of wolves, others more of a retriever face, short and squat like a husky.
Old article from NYT called the NE population Eastern Timber Coyotes.
My dog and I have been shadowed/stalked by local packs on two occasions. I shot one that snuck within 40 yards and it looked just like a wolf. When the pup and I were leaving the area, about a mile and a half from home, the surrounding woods opened up with wolf howls from 8-9 different animals. I wished I had 15 rounds in my Glock 20 instead of 10.
I saw 3 coyotes following my children's school bus dropping off after school. My ex-wife had one bound across the road in front of her car one mourning, cleared 5 foot rock wall uphill and over a ditch like it was nothing. "The fittest and most magnificent canine I had ever seen"
I went snowshoeing after a big storm one morning. About 3/4's of a mile into the woods I came to a bowl shaped depression in the 2 feet of snow about 10ft across. Fresh deer carcass parts and blood all over it. Same route I had taken the day before early in the storm. That's how the pack hunkered down for the storm.
They hunt every night around here.
