Now correct me if I’m wrong but don’t chickens reach sexual maturity pretty quickly? I would think if you had an underperforming rooster you wii or I’d know pretty quickly and be able to make the correction quickly? I don’t know but this seems pretty wacked to me.

About 28 days from egg laid to hatching then 6-8 weeks to finish a Cornish cross (the most popular and fastest growing meat chicken).I don’t have much experience with breeding chickens but with other livestock the saying is “your breeding male is half your herd.”Or flock, etc. So the male is important. It does take some planning ahead to get the breeding and hatching planned out. And the large producers work off of contracts that were thrown off with Covid. No farmer wants to get stuck with a bunch of animals with no market so many farmers and processors likely planned on lower demand.

I do get that to some degree but if your entire business and the entire food supply of chicken in the USA is left to a few roosters I think I’d have a few things split up and have a few roosters laying the pipe or have a few on the side line as pinch hitters.
Also dwindling demand?? Demand has been strong for a long time. I get some people died during Covid and that probably Cassie’s some hiccups and less chicken purchases but the stores were out for a while by me. No granted I do t know much about cocks other than how to use mine so I could be way off here but it just seems weird one or two roosters is all they have.

We saw this some during Covid when a couple of the large meat processors had to reduce their workforce because of Covid and there were some temporary shortages in stores. And when restaurants and schools shut down, it had an impact on demand. Consumer demand still remained fairly strong but overall demand was still down.

Our food system is a house of cards and there’s a stiff breeze. Myself and others are working to build a hyper local food system in our area but it doesn’t happen overnight. We also don’t have the capacity to feed everyone and we can’t compete on price with the big outfits. But for those near us that can afford it, we are a much more stable option. Know your farmer, know your food.

I’m aware of what has happened and what can happen. I have actually worked in the food industry my entire life. It’s amazing how few companies actually make or produce all of our foods.
I worked for a large food manufacturer for around 15+ years and the issue with the bulk or wholesale demand reduction and the increased demand in the retail sector is because of Covid as you mentioned. When the restaurants and the wholesale demand dropped the industry isn’t set up to switch from one to the other quickly. The place I worked for could run two retail lines at one time and they didn’t have the tool/die for the other machines to run anything other than bulk/wholesale. The tool and die making for that is very costly around $450,000-$500,000 and normally takes 9-12 months to get made. There are two companies in the world that do it. No o e would spend that kind of money to adjust when it could never pay off.
So essentially I agree with you and we need more small producers for redundancy and resiliency but it won’t happen.

CNBC always pops up in my yout**e with all kinds of 'why _____ is _____' videos. I have not watched a single one because there are probably zero actual facts mentioned. People really have there heads up their ass, and deserve the pain, if they need someone to tell them 'why interest rates are high' or 'why gas is high' but they still continue to support the same policies that are causing it.

Covid, inflation, bullshit laws, and whatever else, have not really changed anything for me other than how bad I want to see the entire system collapse. I'm ready for the next round.
