Christmas BB Gun

Well I think the time has come to buy my oldest his first gun. He will be 5 1/2 on Christmas and has shown some interest in guns and shooting. I'm not sure if he's mature enough to grasp ramifications of misuse so it will be locked up in the safe and only used under my close supervision. With that said I'm looking for suggestions on BB guns that are kid friendly, outdoor targets for when the weather gets nice, and possibly indoor targets. Growing up we made our own indoor targets but IDK if there's better out there. My fist thought was to stick with a pump rifle with a scope, nut I'm having second thoughts.

The pump rifles were too tough for my son at that age. You will be doing all the work. Even the lever action spring guns were too hard for him. My son did appreciate the increased accuracy of the pump gun over the lever. I just got him the run of the mill Daisy, there may be some out there with easier actions..

Mine are 8 and 11. A Red Ryder was too big and too difficult to cock at that age. I'd look at a CO2 handgun type if I was to do it again.

I wasn't with mine well into my teen years. I still don't know exactly what was going through my mind some of the backstops I had (including my vinyl siding--dad loved that one).

Believe my son's first was a Red Ryder? Started about same age. He had fun with it. We treated it like a real gun went into safe while not in use, all shooting rules applied. Only used while dad was around. Etc. He loved it.

Good point, we got our boys the red riders, but they are hard to cock for them.

You can target shoot compared to BB guns not so much put air soft are more forgiving if hit

You should definitely look at an airsoft rifle for a boy that young.

IMO start with a long gun even though the pistols easier to handle. Teach basics and safety. Less likely to mistakenly turn it on you or someone else.

Walmart is going to have a special run of Red Ryder guns with a compass in the stock, etc this year.

For 5 or 6 years old, the Red Ryder will be a little big, but not unmanageable for him to hold. Not being able to cock it might be a good feature to make sure he's supervised when he shoots it.

A full sized BB gun will be ridiculously big for a kid that size.

+1 for the Red Ryder. EVERY kid wants a lever action Red Ryder, with the compass in the stock.
I mean what better to take out 'Black Bart', and protect the whole Family, other than the 'real deal', Daisy Red Ryder!!

Go co2 for sure. all others will be way too hard to use. Also a pistol might be the way to go.

You can watch the BB, come out the barrel, then fly in a big arch, then hit the target; ye old Kentucky Windage.

I just bought a 760. It's a toy. Very small.


Still kinda hard to pump. Easy for me but I suspect hard for a kid.

Somehow I managed it though.


I.also just grabbed an old model 66 used. That thing is powerful and accurate. Its man sized and I swear whacks the cans way harder.

I have a 66. I got it when I was about 10. I had a hell of a time pumping it. I generally only did 2 pumps for a long time because that’s all I could manage.

Is that the one that has to be pumped 8 to 10 times per shot? That would get tedious pretty quickly.

When you're a kid, and it's your only choice, you get used to it pretty quick.
