Visa said it would adopt the International Organization for Standardization’s new merchant code for gun sales, which was announced on Friday. Until Friday, gun store sales were considered “general merchandise.”

“Following ISO’s decision to establish a new merchant category code, Visa will proceed with next steps, while ensuring we protect all legal commerce on the Visa network in accordance with our long-standing rules,” the payment processor said in a statement.

I have no doubt in my mind that in a few years one will not be allowed to purchase anything firearm related with a charge card. We will all have a social credit score. Owning a gun will make one a very undesirable person. ... This could be being put on a no fly list. Look beyond the obvious. Step 1 is to create this code and create a tracking system. Which will include debit card purchases to I think since most debit cards from the big 3 can be used for either debit or credit. Step 2 will be to coerce CC companies to deny sales for that merchandize code. Kind of like what they have done with UPS and FedEx to deny shipping of guns or gun parts. The long game is much worse than what we are seeing now.

Will online stores accept prepaid CCs?

I use privacy.com to secure ALL online purchases. Been using them for years. It's basically a burner card, one-time use virtual credit card. It is connected to my bank account, but all the purchases made with my privacy.com cards show up under the category "personal" to my bank. You can use any name and any zip code with their virtual cards.

Using cash is definitely the way to go for in-person purchases, but obviously not all purchases are going to be in person.

Its my understanding that the vendor code is based on the core of the business. Jimmy Bobs Guns would be marked as a gun retailer, but what about a true mixed merchandise vendor? Walmart, Runnings, Cabellas etc?

I grew up in Brooklyn in the 60s/70s. At at that time, it was mostly working/lower class, but everyone always seemed to have plenty of money around.

Learned over the years that there were many people who operated their entire lives on the margins of legit society. My parents were professionals, and were always straight-up, but they seemed to be the only ones.

Not that there was really a ton of illegal activity going on. Did not have to be. These were not the people who had a thirst for much that had to be satisfied through a true black market. These were decent hard working people, but they just thought differently. Cash income, paid with cash, very little if anything on paper. Your word was good enough.

My grandfather worked at a Ford/Linc/Merc car dealership in Howard Beach, Queens. He used to tell stories of suitcase cash for an entire Lincoln Continental. Buying a car is completely legal, so he was good. Where the cash came from was none of his business.

Some items were acquired through 'falling off the truck' but mostly, things were gotten by 'knowing a guy' or 'paying wholesale' or whatever. I was young then, so it all seemed like a mystery world. But to them, it was very real.

Bottom line was that you could get anything you wanted, most of it was legal enough so that no one cared. But it was all bought and sold in such a way that the buyers and sellers could rest easy knowing that although no-one really cared, no-one really knew anything either.

Cash is king, baby.
