Eh... Everyone is playing politics as usual. The paid city FFs are unionized - IAFF.

What they won't tell you is that on a second alarm, the PAID departments from West Point, Beacon, and Castle Point VA get called to the scene. The off duty FFs get recalled. The 7 volunteer departments within a few miles of the city either don't get called at all; get called to stand-by; or get called to the scene on a third alarm.

There have been times when a volunteer department has had to pass the scene to go to the public safety building for standby while NFD was still waiting for the paid mutual aid to show up.

It's a game and they're in it for the $$$. The only ones I feel for are the residents who suffer as a result

Im sure if this plan were to materialize, there would be no tension or hard feelings between the firemen getting paid $100k a year and the volunteers getting paid $0.

They should do volunteer cops, garbage men and DPW workers too!

good luck bringing in volunteers. In these times its difficult to get volunteers in the best of departments. This place is clearly toxic.

Oh and don't forget the 165 hours training to complete the required NY Fire 1 to be an interior firefighter.
