Being a transplant from Missouri, I grew up with Air Raid Sirens.
They would test them on the First Monday of Every Month at 11:00 AM. And that was a time in the 50's to do the duck and cover drill. PS We still got sonic booms in those days too.
It is an eerie sound. They updated them to Tornado Warnings and those would go off all the time even though the tornado was 20 miles away. So, people learned to ignore them.
They have been replaced with a huge speaker system and someone can actually talk over them.
I remember the first time I heard that. God? Is that YOU?
Moving to Western NY in 1988, I wondered why they didn't have Tornado Sirens. (Because they don't get tornados.)
Then as I was watching a YouTube video about horses in the Netherlands, their Sirens went off during a monthly test.
Are there still counties in NY that have sirens? Just wondering.
