And while American homes have proven capable of lasting against the elements for 100 plus years, they do have a weakness. They don’t stop bullets worth a damn! Maybe that is also because we always play away games.
Unless you have something a little different, like a log cabin with foot-thick walls, your house is largely indefensible against rifles. It is even worse against fire, which is a concern I often see ignored in prepper circles. Your back fence will burn, your shingles will burn, and the outside of your house will burn with very little effort. We have largely mitigated this problem in civilized society by having good fire departments and enforcing suburban burn bans, but it is a different animal when Mad Max rules are in play. In short, I would not want to ever try and defend my house from teeming hordes equipped with Molotov cocktails and long guns.

This is honestly something I hadn't put much thought into but makes a lot of sense and think it's over looked.
A simple low tech solution I thought of to set up an in home firing position is to stage a few garbage cans or totes full of rocks and sand at the window that you can hide behind for ballistic cover. Not sure how practical but it's a start.
Now fire.... Ehh that's a bit tougher. I definitely think I need to store a few more fire extinguishers. Even just for accidental burns could be catastrophic without a fire Dept. We would be much more reliant on candles and with an open flame accidentally burning your house down is a serious problem.
I have thought about these 2 topics in depth. If I was to harden a retreat I would build the exterior from steel or concrete siding and steel for the roof. It's not 100% but would give you another layer of protection. As far as shooting through walls. You could always mount steel on the sides during construction. It probably wouldn't be that great of an expense but difficult to hide. I do like the idea of having a barrel or some sort of holder on the sides to create a backstop. I never considered that.

Good read, definitely thought provoking. The emphasis on the rifle as primary weapon is refreshing to see. Makes me think I need to modify my shopping lists a bit. Also gives me ideas about hardening a home, when I get to a place in life I can build one (though that hopefully won't be in NY).
