cleaning a revolver

so a few months ago I bought my 1st revolver a Smith 617 in stainless love shooting it but hate to clean it how do u clean the top strap just above the barrel I've tried a razor blade steel wool and a few other things still as black as a witches heart. also glad the thing is a 6 shot and not a 10 cleaning the cylinder is no fun either. had my dealer install a Dawson fiber optic front sight the thing is awesome to shoot.

I haven't noticed a problem with my 22s, but for the .38s I use a dental pick to scrape the lead residue off. Hoppes and a brass bristle brush takes off the rest.

No cleaning necessary on the part unless you're gonna sell the gun.

Carbon staining is not an issue. Don't over clean. You wouldn't notice the carbon on blue steel.

Get a bore snake for the cylinders. One zip and done.

For leading I use a .22 Tornado spiral stainless steel brush. Forcing cone.


Alternately I have two rods, brush on one, patch jag on the other.

Brushes always fit lose in the cylinder.

These work pretty well on carbon build up as well on my stainless revolvers

I'm not sure why cleaning top strap on a revolver would be a big deal or hard to do.

For general cleaning, I clean the cylinders (all 8) and the barrel after pretty much every range session (I'll shoot at least 60-70 rounds per session so there is a bit of carbon fouling in there). Bore cleaner followed by oiled patches. For the rest of the revolver, general wipe down and that's about it. I've yet to take apart the revolver to clean up and lubricate the internals (that'll probably be done once I get into the thousands for round count).

Despite what people think about revolvers being simple and easy to operate and maintain, I find that they generally require more proficiency (reloads and mastering the DA trigger pulls) and more maintenance (9 bores to clean as opposed to one on a semi-auto).

But I I think they're great pistols to practice with.
