CMMG 22LR Dedicated AR Build

I am sure it will work. The accuracy of 22LR through a 223/5.56 barrel has always been questionable but for hitting cans at 25 yards it should be Ok.
If you are going dedicated upper, right to bear has slick sides in stock. Dedicated 22lr barrel, a new collet for your bcg, and a handguard you will be go. I did one and don't regret it one bit.
Bonus whatever sights you use can be POA/poi for 22, it will be more accurate, and you don't need a gas block or tube.

Gas length doesn't matter of you're running rimfire thru it exclusively. Just my $0.02.
I've also heard people installing the gas block backwards if you truly intend to run it dedicated.

Do you need the conversion kit with the dedicated 22LR barrel? Or just the bolt

I built a dedicated upper with the same cmmg barrel as you selected. Using CCI standard velocity ammo it is very accurate. I shot 240 out of 250 at an Appleseed with it. Usually shoot mid 230’s.
I have two dedicated uppers now. I use S&W 10-22 magazines and the better mag adapters. They run very reliably

Thats it. Before you put the .22RF collar on your adapter watch the CMMG video on how to do it without damaging your adapter. Either on cmmg web site or YouTube.
I have put close to 10000 rounds through mine. Lots of fun, and kids / grandkids and “old kids” all want to shoot them.
I originally built mine as training rifle for Appleseed shoot and for positional shooting practice for CMP matches. It’s more economical to train with .22 and takes less time in reloading room. I found it great training aid.

Is the want for the AR platform because of your paper weights? Or do you just need a good 22lr rifle?

Regarding failure to feed jams or poor ejection it almost always is dirty feed ramp and chamber. .22 LR is dirty. Crud will build on ramp and in chamber. I rarely clean .22 barrels but the feed ramp and chamber will need almost a polishing to get clean. When I’m practicing for an Appleseed shoot I will polish clean every 800 rounds or so to avoid problems. Then clean before match.
I polish chamber with a bronze brush in cordless drill, and spin polish until brush is warm. There are a couple good videos on cleaning dedicated uppers for reliability.

Good video, I'm surprised CMMG doesn't include those two items in their conversion package.
Those misfires will be a huge pain in the butt with a fixed mag. Other than that its a real cool idea!!!!!

FRB, any handguard will work. I have an Odinworks on mine as I was looking for light weight, but thinking of making it the same as my 556 build. No clearance issues to worry about with any guards since no gas block.
I think you will really like that setup. I have a grab bag of ammo my mark III won't eat, the cmmg kit shoots it all so far. Eventually I need to get better glass for it, deserves much better than the cheapo vortex it wears now.

@FRB damn you. Now I have all the parts on the way to build a dedicated AR22LR of course this will be done on a raw 80% lower with a raw upper, handguard and buffer tube. It will be my silver 22.

Watching the video on bore buddy weighted system in the pastI’ve thought it might help reliability even in semi auto mode. Might try it some day.
I do keep a spare firing pin I’m my kit. The one firing pin I broke drove me nuts with intermittent failures to fire. The broken tip was trapped in the adapter but was floating around. most of the time It worked, then I’d have a few failures to fire, then it would work.

That looks pretty damn nice! As for sights, I have had decent luck with utg flip up sights of all things. They are cheap and I really was just looking for a placeholder in case an optic fails. I have a cheap vortex on my build, strike eagle 3x9 I think? Not happy with it though.

Build is completed! This was a fun project. Especially considering the challenge of getting the parts needed for the build. I have long arms so the FRS15 ability to add extra length is perfect.
For optics thinking a Prism scope will fit the bill..... 100 yards or so and in plinking and varmint use only.
