I was BM2 USCG, SOP for swim call , in my time swim guard had M-14 on flying bridge;

When sharks sighted, ones that came close - one round over, one round under, repeat as necessary, never heard of a shark getting shot

If people only knew how often sharks are within feet of them while swimming in knee deep water.....let alone in the deep ocean.
Sharks rarely attack in the open ocean.....especially a 6 foit Mako.
Ive swam with mako and thresher many times....also nurse sharks, black tips, white tips, whalers, and tiger sharks. The black tip are the most nosey. They usually just want to check you out.

Far as I’m concerned - chalk one up for the need to have guns, chalk one down for the folks who say gub’ment folks should be the only ones to have them.

As a regular dude, I don’t know where sharks reside, and I’m elated that someone - government or not - uses any means at their disposal to make my swim not an affair where I get eaten.

To be fair, sharks generally know that they don’t like our taste, but they also can’t always differentiate, either.

I have dove with sharks several times as well. Blacktips, Whitetips, Hammerheads, Makos, Tigers, Nurse, Whale. As well as a dozen species of rays... For the most part none of them really care about humans as anything more than a curiosity... The only one I ever REALLY worry about... Bulls... They are some highly aggressive and very dangerous animals. Was on a charter about 10 years ago on a dive between the piers of 7 Mile Bridge In the Fla Keys and a guy from another boat diving in the area got attacked by one. Took a massive chunk out of the rear of his thigh for no apparent reason. Nasty fuckers..
