I don't know how many of you landlubbers partake but if you like to fish cod South of Block Island now is the time to go. After reading some recent reports I jumped on a party boat out of Narragansett yesterday. We had a full boat limit by 10 Am. It was a complete Cod crush. If you enjoy one of the best eating fish there is get them now.

I am curious as to what the charter boats use for tackle.
I fish cod off the coast of Newfoundland. Usually in 26 to 35 fathom.
Hand line them in the traditional way. Cod there is some of the best in the world.
What do the charter guys use. Rod and reel? If so what rod length?. Line type? ( I would guess some type of braided line? ). Reel? Gear ratio on the reel?
I ask as the SO fishes with me and hand lining can be tough on the hands and a bit of work.

I am not sure what the boat provides because I only use my own gear. I use a 8' ugly stick boat rod and a Shimano Torium reel spooled with 65 lb braid and a top shot of 50 lb. Mono. It gives me the flexibility of switching from jigs to bate depending on the bite. Yesterday bate out fished jigs 2 to 1.

Yeah, I was thinking around a 5 or 6:1 gear ratio for the depth and braided line. We don't even bother with mono leaders. Hook goes right on the very heavy mono handline. Heavy bottom weight with three hooks spaced about 2.5 3 feet apart above the weight. Rarely use bait. Just the red or Orange rubber that comes with the hook. Cod seem to go for it like made. If we do use bait it is usually squid, or just cut out the puddock (gullet ) from an already landed cod.
If you are on them you can haul them in as fast as you can get them off the hook.

When I was a kid in Maine I caught a big one on a charter boat. I don't remember exactly, but it was big enough for the 5 of us to eat it. I had the biggest fish on the boat until the last 10 minutes. Some guy beat me out. It was fun.
