With the growing popularity of muzzle brakes, beyond the associated decibel level, the side and rearward gas force is something that comes along with them. Especially for those who use them on bench rests in close proximity to others. If you've ever been around one without some sort of protection, I doubt the MAGA hat you were wearing stayed on it's original perch.
I had made up a set for local and out of town matches. The best way to secure them to the bench top is with carpenter's clamps know as "quick grips". The ones I had made up were approx. 16" x 16". Depending on placement (and size of the bench) too big and they don't fit. Too small and they might not catch enough of the muzzle blast. 16 x 16 seemed to be the right size.
Their size and shape made them cumbersome to carry and took up a lot of space during transport. A compact option was needed.
Quick Summary:
*Folds up to just about 1.5" thick.
*Ordered Piano hinges, threaded inserts, and matching thumb screws from McMaster-Carr.
*1/2" MDF I had leftover from a project.
*Thumbscrew stores in the support bracket for transport. Thumbscrew goes through the face and into the support bracket with the threadsert.
*Quick rattle can paint job for "tactical" flair.
These now fit in a fraction of the space as previous. Could substitute any material desired. Can both be carried easily under one arm.
I'll have to do some field testing to see how they hold up to the forces. These were sort of a prototype so we'll see what tweeks I may make.
