Apparently the Corrections Officers that were Fired received letters informing them they had to Surrender any Firearms carried on their Badges, and ostensibly any "assault weapons" and magazines over ten rounds, since their Officer Status has been revoked.
CO's are having to surrender Handguns held on their Badges.

It somewhat came as a surprise to me on the form of "Oh shit, I didn't think of that."
Friend who's former State Corrections (got out when the local Prison was closed) asked me if who would take his a former co-worker's handguns that he had on his Badge and how it worked...meant to post this Monday, but....Squirrel!
Neither they nor us should be compelled to beg and pay indulgences to the State for permission to have a handgun let alone register it...NY is the only State in the Union that make this demand.

I think he's merely making the point that there shouldn't be special classes of people and the elected elites enforcers shouldn't receive "preferred rights" regular citizens can't exercise.
The COs can go through the same miserable process everyone else is forced to go through to exercise their rights.
And for the record I am in favor of having all legal law abiding citizens the same gun rights that NY LEOs can have.

30 years or so ago the NY COs went on strike. The state pulled the same move of you can’t carry on your badge outside of work. MOST COs learned lesson and got permits and didn’t carry on badge. Hopefully they learned the lesson then
The fact that a vocation can instill special privilege is reprehensible... It should not exist! No different for a Judge or Elected Representative... When you step out of your office, courtroom, jail, police station, etc., you are a citizen first and only!
I know that won't sit well with some, and that's ok, but those it might abrade, are those who enjoy those privileges, so those jaded opinions really are moot.

Yeah, I heard this was coming. I told my local CO’s that I would store and assist them getting permits until resolved. If they still have the badge they can turn them in to an FFL while they get their permits. But many have NON-NYS compliant stuff and that would be an issue. That and “High Capacity” mags. But I offered.

I have a hard time understanding why any of the cos who value their 2A rights wouldn't maintain a pistol permit as a backup. One is none, two is one, and all of that.

This has always been the policy. Once an officer leaves service any firearms registered under their badge would then be assigned using a NY permit.

my only issue with this is if the CO's bought the guns with their own money. If the state provided the firearms, fine, take'em back. But if they bought them, then go get a permit like the rest of us and keep whats yours.
