The non-profit organization formed last week by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his political allies won’t register to lobby or become a lobbying entity.
That’s according to Steve Cohen, a board member of the group New Yorkers United Together and a former secretary to the governor.
The group last week unveiled an ad featuring Cuomo and celebrities touting an immigrant legal defense fund.
“This is non-political, non-lobbying, an effort to get both a message of importance elevated above what is right now an unfortnuatey environment we’re all living in,” Cohen said in an interview.
The group is different from the Committee to Save New York, a lobbying entity formed in 2011 that backed Cuomo’s agenda at the time. The organization disbanded after two years of backing Cuomo’s fiscal agenda in Albany and just before a new requirement went into effect that would have required the group disclose its donors.
Unlike the Committee to Save New York, Cohen said New Yorkers United Together would provide a vehicle for those concerned “an opportuniy to give them a place to go and participate.”
