As I do not know any rich hoity toity types, do they live in NYC because of the " I live on Park Ave" thing?
The only real experience that I have with the city is from the show Sex in the City and it seems that it is fashionable to reside there .
I don't get the allure. I do not like the crowds of people that as always pictured on sidewalks, the street people, the traffic, the attitude ( if tv is factually correct). My buddy is from the Jersey Shore area and says that what you see on Snookie's show is real. No thank you!

I have never been there in the 28 yrs that I've been in NY and still have no desire to go.
The closest that I have been was this side of the GWB last fall to pick up my son & his broke down Jeep.
When I worked at BassPro / Tracker Marine, we sent a couple of boats and stuff every year for a filming of " Fox and Friends" . When asked if I wanted to go I always said hell no. One guy blew out a tire a pontoon boat trailer entering the tunnel...another year it was " Lets take the pontoon off the trailer and float it in this pond that we made." . After the filming, it was " Alrighty, put it back on the trailer " . Two guys, no equipment. just the truck bottle jack and a couple of 2x4s.....

In fairness (if you're into it) NYC has, among other things- 40,000+ restaurants where you can get authentic and quality food originating in just about any country on earth, world class museums (arms and armor at the Met is a favorite of mine), more than half a dozen major sports teams, probably 100's of theaters and other music/theatrical venues of varying size, I could go on... there are lots of reasons people want to live there.

Most all of which are essentially shut down now and may never return to their former glory, at least not for a long time and certainly not while we have a Sandinista in Gracie Mansion.

Its also mighty convenient to live where you work if, like I used to, you work 70, 80 hours a week.

My firm is very much taking a hard look at how much money they spend on leasing office space. One of the issues preventing them from making any sudden moves is long term leases (which, ordinarily, are not a bad thing in and of themselves).

By not commuting on Metro North, not wearing a suit every day, and not eating lunch and dinner in the city, I am actually WEALTHIER working from home in the burbs than when I was commuting.

Wife is in that boat too... No Commute... No gas, No tolls, No nothing... Sits at the kitchen counter in her PJ's with a laptop, a cup of coffee and at least one of 3 Doberman noses in her lap most of the day. This thing has saved us almost $700 a month in expenses. And her company (Key Bank) is saying nobody is going back into the office until at least January 10th... They may even shut that particular office down altogether.
