Cuomo doesn’t expect gun control bill to pass this year
Gov. Cuomo said Tuesday he doesn’t expect any more major pieces of legislation to pass this year, including his own proposal to allow cops, family members and school employees to “flag” gun owners who could be a danger to themselves or others.
The governor told reporters that significant bills passed with the state budget and the political climate is too tense to accomplish any more before the Legislature adjourns for the year Wednesday.
“Virtually everything we could get done, we got done in the budget,” he said.
“We hit a roadblock on all these issues. If anything, the political environment has only gotten hotter. The issues left on table are fundamental political differences.”
That includes his “red flag gun bill,” which would allow courts to hear petitions to remove firearms from people deemed to be dangerous by relatives, teachers or law enforcement personnel.
“The Senate doesn’t want to do my red flag gun bill,” Cuomo said. “The people of the state will make their voices heard in November.”
State Sen. Majority Leader John Flanagan has accused Cuomo of failing to discuss the proposal with Republicans and blamed the governor for the lack of progress.

Gov. Cuomo ratcheted up pressure on Republicans who tenuously control...
“More than eight weeks ago, the Governor threw in the towel on the legislative session and said there was nothing left for us to do,” Flanagan said.
“Since then, he has been both disengaged and disinterested in doing the people’s business, content instead to govern by photo ops and press releases.”
