Uhh... A friend of mine was being followed on the thruway one day. He was the chief of a volunteer fire department and had red lights in his car. He flipped the lights on for a second and moved to another lane as the car following him took off. He got the plate number.
He called a mutual friend who worked as a dispatcher for a town police department and asked him to run the plate.
I don't recall - it either came back with a random name/address or as no such number.
The next evening he was visited by the FBI. It was an undercover car and they were surveiling another car. Our friend the dispatcher got in a world of shit about it too.

Got this one in retaliation to the DMV deciding to completely shut down at the beginning of the scamdemic… I had just bought a motorcycle and couldn’t register it so I rode around with this one.
Edit: to head off any comments about legality, the bike was insured and on a PA temp tag in my name.
