Albany, N.Y. — If the governor has his way, New Yorkers won't use plastic bags anymore.


New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is proposing a ban on plastic bags as part of this year's executive budget.

The effort is to combat litter because plastic bags do not biodegrade. Cuomo said Sunday that the ban will also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with plastic bag production and disposal - from the petroleum used to produce the bags to emissions from their transportation to landfills.

There has been a very comprehensive study done in Denmark, a rabid eco-state, and these bags currently in use are something like two hundred times more eco-friendly than cotton, reusable totes. I wish I could remember the entire run down but they are by far the most eco-friendly alternative in use as of now.

A Penn State study researched the impact of San Francisco's plastic grocery bag ban and concluded the plastic grocery bag ban was accountable for leading to 5 to 6 deaths per year.

"Recently, many jurisdictions have implemented bans or imposed taxes upon plastic grocery bags on environmental grounds. San Francisco County was the first major US jurisdiction to enact such a regulation, implementing a ban in 2007. There is evidence, however, that reusable grocery bags, a common substitute for plastic bags, contain potentially harmful bacteria. We examine emergency room admissions related to these bacteria in the wake of the San Francisco ban. We find that ER visits spiked when the ban went into effect. Relative to other counties, ER admissions increase by at least one fourth, and deaths exhibit a similar increase."

Since this information was provided to FUAC. Maybe FUAC can figuratively hang for 100 wrongful deaths or negligent homicides in NYS every year. It would be poetic justice if Cuomo was taken out by the garbage.
