De Blasio moves to ban natural gas hookups: 'Literally' our 'only choice is renewable energy'
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is pushing forward with a green agenda, calling for a ban on natural gas hookups on new buildings in the city by 2030.

“We need to make clear that New York City will renounce fossil fuels fully. Therefore, we need to ban fossil fuel connections in the city by the end of this decade, literally ensuring that our only choice is renewable energy,” de Blasio said in his " State of the City" address on Friday.

De Blasio’s goals include moving the New York City government to run on “renewable energy in the next four years.” The plan relies on Canadian hydropower, imported into the United States through new transmission lines. Lawmakers in San Francisco passed a similar ordinance in November last year.

All construction after June 2021 must use electricity instead of gas for cooking, heating, and cooling. The announcement comes after 41 cities have adopted plans to reduce reliance on natural gas.

Gas is dangerous if you're an idiot, but it's not that dangerous. It's a ticking time bomb if you don't have a sense of smell. That's why they scent it to hell so it's impossible to not know you have even a little bit leaking. And even then, if you look at the data, it's extremely rare you're going to die in a gas explosion in your home.

Overwhelmingly the only time gas is dangerous is when someone hooks it up in a sloppy way, ignores the smell or doesn't scent it, and then further ignores the problems. @1075tech can probably speak to it further, but that's my understanding of why gas is fairly safe if you're not stupid.

Just a year or so ago. when the gas companies put a moratorium on new hook ups, because they don't have the infrastructure because FUAC won't allow new pipelines, FUAC and Blabio had a fit and threatened to pull their license.

When i moved to Lewis County I would look at all the windmills and think to myself "Wow that is great, I love that I live in a place that has wind energy." THen I was handed a reality check and told that lal tha energy goes right to the city....

it hits your meter, which then turns a few dials so the utility company knows just how far to shove it up your ass.
the NG comes out of the meter and goes to each and every appliance that uses NG, each appliance then reduces the gas pressure further through another regulator called 'Da Gas valve' and is set to the appliance manufactures recommendations, usually 3.5" w.c.

NG is oderless, colorless, and lighter than air, but during the manufacturing process the producers add Mercaptan, so your wife will know when there is a leak, trust me, women can smell NG L O N G before men can. im sure it has something to do with mother nature and the universe, but i dont know how to explain it.

I let a master plumber do my gas line. The guy does good work. Not cheap, but I'd rather good over cheap. I forgot what he used for the flexible line that goes to the stove, but I know it wasn't the cheapest option we had line wise.

Either a NG or LPG explosion will turn your house to toothpicks. NG is lighter than air so it tends to collect at ceilings or in attics. LP is heavier and will collect near the floor or basement - conveniently where your pilot light is located.

When they're picking the insulation from your house out of treetops a block away, they'll look at the piping and try to figure out who messed with it, who disconnected the appliance without shutting the line off, who rigged up the BBQ tank in the basement for the water heater or if the delivery guy didn't do a leak check after you ran out of gas.

I actually bought a brand new stove last week and had to convert it from NG to LP. As you said propane comes in at much higher pressure. The job isn't difficult if you are mechanically inclined and have the brain for it. Just change out the orifices for the stovetop and tighten up the regulator for the stove (stove may also have orifice depending on model). As long as you use sealer where you're supposed to and don't use it where you're not AND check your work you should be fine. Making everyone go to electric would be disastrous.

the only real difference is in BTU content,

• Heating Oil has 138,690 BTUs per gallon.
• Natural Gas has 1,030 BTUs per cubic foot. 135 Cubic feet equals the heat content of one gallon of oil.
• Kerosene has 131,890 BTUs per gallon. 1.05 gallons equals the heat content of one gallon of oil.
• Propane has 91,500 BTUs per gallon. 1.52 gallons equals the heat of one gallon of oil.
• Electricity has 3,413 BTUs per kilowatt hour (kwh). 40.6kwh equals the heat content of one gallon of oil.
• Wood: One full cord of wood has the heat value of 95 gallons of oil.
• Anthracite Coal has 12,000 BTUs per pound. About 12 pounds equals the heat content of one gallon of oil.

and a gallon of LPG weighs about 4.2 pounds.....

and LPG burns hotter than NG, years ago, when they started using flame rectification in furnaces, LPG conversions were eating flame sensors like crazy, like every year i would have to replace flame sensors in LPG units, NG i could get through 4 or 5 years before replacing them. the FS manufacturers said it was because of the additives in LPG, then they started making the FS out of different metal. now I can get a couple years out of LPG FS

A lot of people don't realize there is a massive difference between natural gas and the older "town gas" that was used historically for head and light.

Natural gas is mostly methane, there is essentially 0 carbon monoxide in it.

Town gas was largely carbon monoxide (and wasn’t transported across the country via pipeline, but was manufactured locally from coal)

You're probably not going to be able to kill yourself by putting your head in a natural gas oven.

With the old town gas on the other hand it was a very real possibility.

Thus the old trope of suicide by oven in old books and movies that just doesn't happen anymore.
