I'm willing to bet the population was way to high to start with. Rabbits have a population cycle (~7 years, I believe) where it peaks out then declines with predators or disease. Predator populations lag behind the prey populations. Not exactly an unknown thing to those that hunt or live in more rural areas, but I'm sure the inner city folk are going to be freaking out over rabbit pox or hareona virus.

It’s a real thing. My wife works with a rabbit rescue and about a year ago they made the decision that no outside domestic rabbits can be brought into the rescue unless they can be quarantined first. It’s a virus that makes them essentially bleed out and die. It can be a wild or domestic rabbit.
I could be wrong on this but Australia developed it or used it because they had so many releases domestic rabbits or so that’s the story. Is it true? No clue but they killed tons of them this way is the story in the rescue network.
