Deer Camp

I really miss deer camp! We used to rent a cabin in Allegheny State park every year for over 30 years with my sons a few cousins would show throughout the week and my brothers would make an appearance for my dad at some point. My boys are grown up and busy with work and family, my pops has past away, man I miss it, especially my dad, he loved hunting, opening day was his Christmas.

I know it's late but this was my pops the first night at every deer camp, he would open the first beer and say "Here to a successful, and safe hunt, but more importantly, here's to family" Damn I miss that old man!

ya, sadly this is a tradition that may not last another generation. Kids nowadays are being indoctrinated into thinking guns are bad and gun owners are worse and Hunting is an activity that is past its time. <sigh>

For sure, my son just told me 5 minutes ago that one of his work buddies want him to teach him to hunt and he asked me what I taught and I told him, absolutely. That we have an obligation to pass this great tradition on to as many people as possible!

My father died back in 69 when I was 11so I never really had a mentor for guns, shooting and hunting. But it was instilled in my blood. My mom bought me a Mossberg mag fed 22lr bolt action rifle and let me go. It didn,t take long and I was bringing meat home for the table, squirrels, rabbits and grouse. Once a 4 point buck.

All that aside I m 60, my brother older by a couple of years. We recently have been talking about buying some property close to state game land to build a hunting camp.
Kids these day might hunt, but want nothing to do with a hunting camp like years ago.

If we find a piece of property and build a basic hunting camp and then build small cabins and trailer sights in the broome/Cortland county area any one interested?
We would have a place to shoot the shit, with people our age. Get groups together to go on hunts. Maybe have younger guy that could drag the deer out for us old bastards.
Just a basic place for us to go, have a good few days, maybe a couple of weeks and enjoy life.
Still in the planning g stages, but it will happen here shortly.

How about a definite maybe. I'm nearing retirement an not sure where we will end up, but somewhere in PA is possible.

My Dad got crippled up at work back in the early 1960's, when I was just about 9-10 y/o. He used to go to the hunting camp with his Buddies before he got crippled. I never had the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors with my Dad. I can vaguely remember him taking us to the "Old Rock Pile" stadium when I was just a little kid. After he got crippled up, we never went again. I asked him about that when I got older, and he said; "How could I take you guys there (I had 4 Brothers), when I couldn't protect you if anything happened. That certainly put it in proper perspective to me at that stage in my life (having Sons of my own!).

I would say to anybody who has a Dad who spends time with them during hunting season; You are truly a lucky person!

Both of my gramps died way before I was born. And my dad died when I was 11 so I don,t have the perfect outdoor entrance as most of you had, but I LOVE the hunting here in the Southern Zone and would like to put back what I have enjoyed for decades.

when i was growing up , we headed to the camp .. my grandpa and 4 uncles shared 56 acres of land and was open to all the families to camp n hunt ..
the upper cabin was call the Never Rest and is still there 52 yrs as of now .. over the years of growing up the land was sold off in parcels , friends of the family and 2 distant relatives.. i still can hunt there .. was just up the a few days ago .. here is one of the old stands we used to use ..

This past weekend, L to R: my cousin, me, my dad, my uncle (the landowner).

I know how fortunate I am to still have this. I’m 39 and my father still tromps around the woods with me all day. I took a small buck and my cousin took a doe. We head up there during bow season as well.

I wish more of the family still hunted. Taking 2 younger cousins tomorrow for their first trip hunting. Hopefully they get hooked. My brother is finally coming around also, he being the only one so far with a son. Hopefully I can get at least one of my daughters into it as well. My cousin in that pic also only has daughters. I’m sure he’ll try with them too.

Thanks guys. Like I said, I know how lucky we are to still have this, no matter how small the “crew” is. I have another uncle and his son who hunt close by where we do in Otsego County, and one more cousin who seems to have dropped off after meeting his wife and now about to have a baby.

It,s nice to have close family ties and have a group to hunt with, back in the day there was myself, my two sons, three brothers and one of their sons. We all hunted new York and Pennsylvania together. My oldest brother died, next oldest brother moved away and doesn,t bother to come back to hunt. He,s getting older and can,t get around that easy any more.
My other brother got a few dics in his back injured at work and is 100% disabled so his hunting is very limited, but he can get out for an hour or so.
We were hunting the other day and he got a doe, his son is only interested in bow hunting now and goes by himself at his in-laws.
So when I come back i hunt with my one brother some and my two kids when they have time to go with their commitments.
It,s all good and this year has been real good.

I like seeing groups of family and or friends getting together for hunting. But it seams they are getting fewer and farther between.

I went on a little field trip with my brother, seen an older hunting camp for sale. I'll call tomorrow to see the price and acreage.

I checked that little red hunting cabin out, way to much for what it is. Nine acres, No electric, No well, No septic. The cabin should be torn down and a new one built. $30,000.
