Lol.I was just thinking about this on the way home from work tonight.I would think its not legal.unless its during hunting season,during shooting hours,and off the road(other side of the ditch).also 500 feet from structure,unless you have permission from the owner.guess circumstances would dictate if its legal or not.

I guy I knew said he kept a knife handy in the glove box to open up an artery in case that happened. Only hit one deer myself and it died pretty quick.
Also heard a story about a guy who hit a deer with his car. Deer was laying on the side of the road still alive. Another driver pulled up behind him got out and told the guy who hit the deer that he had a shotgun in the trunk of his car and would dispatch the deer (I think he wanted to take it home with him to process). Anyway, Guy #2 gets his shotgun, pumps the action, deer's eyes open up, hops up and runs off before a shot can fired. I guess it had heard that sound before.

I agree with the knife to cut its throat. Unless the deer is still spry, then shoot it.
I know around here 99.9% of police and wildlife officers will allow you to dispatch the deer and take it home. We are very rural and hunting is inbedded in our culture. Nobody wants an animal to go to waste.

I agree with this. What if the deer gets up and runs back into the road? Could be dangerous. I think you could make a case for it. If you can wait I sure would, but you can't always. I have thought about this many times as well.
We deal almost exclusively with the sheriffs.
Ive never had any issues with any of them though.

There's a calculus to be done here to shoot the deer.
Limb one: pain and suffering in a wounded animal, vs
Limb two: euthanizing the animal, and taking a risk that you will have the wrong officer respond/the wrong DA and be prosecuted for any number of different charges, which can result in losing your job, your ability to provide for your family, and possibly jail time.
It's a tough call; I keep a knife in my car as others have stated, I would handle it that way.

No, do not shoot it. A pissy DEC guy will say you shot it, and then ran it over. I actually picked one (deer) that was still alive and took it to the game warden's house and demanded he put it down, because he was unwilling to come to the sence and do it. Almost got a ticket for it, but he decieded that keeping his job was more important..
