Defensive Pistol class today

Just took the defensive pistol class today from Iron Sight at my local gun range. Great class, learned a lot but also came away disagreeing with the guys on a key point. One thing I learned, and had already heard about, was that you revert to your training when SHTF. I certainly did. There was a part where you have a SIRT gun and you get attacked by the instructor then you need to go to gun when you start getting overcome. Because I have 30 years martial arts experience, I never went to gun where I would have been completely justified in doing so. I'm 5'2 150# instructor is likely 6'4 300#. Disparity of force anyone? I just continued hand to hand stuff. Dumb.

The part I disagreed with was his insistence that a laser had no place on a defensive handgun. I beg to differ. I had one on mine, as they asked that you bring what you carry, and I did. Glock 43 slide on 48 frame with Crimson Trace laser. Does anyone else run a laser or do you agree with the instructor?

I have no use for a laser on my handguns. Each to their own.

One could argue that's why a laser is useful. With the laser on, I was able to just point and shoot with both eyes open and quickly put the dot on what I wanted to shoot and it was fast and accurate.

I can understand that. I would guess, just from reading, most defensive shootings happen with a few to ten feet away. There is no aiming.

This type of interaction is how I train. Just never needed the laser thing on my carry gun.

I agree, it's personal choice. When it was working during the class, it almost seemed like cheating. My shots were faster and more accurate than others in the class, which is why I brought this up. The instructor seemed to think that they're useless no matter who it is. I never get to train with that gun in that manner, so to be able to be so quick and so accurate with no prior drawing and/or rapid fire practice tells me otherwise. It may seem like cheating, but in a life and death moment, I'm not fighting fair.
