If your kid gets suspended for defending themself, tell them to punch the principal in the face. Then you can demand he be fired when he stops the kid from hitting him again.

When my 2 sons were in grammar school,early to mid 90's, my younger son comes home and tells me that a 4th grader has been harassing him,my son was in 2nd grade at the time.My older son was in the 6th grade at the time.I asked the older guy why he wasnt sticking up for his brother.He claimed he didnt see it happen and the kid is smaller than him.Told him if the kid bothered his brother again they better both kick his ass.I know the kid picking on my son's father,he was always a local asshole.I was off from work one day so I walk up to the school at 3 oclock and find the kid kicking my younger sons school bag and pushing him o to the ground every time he tried to pick it up.My older son was off horsing around with his friends.I lose it and call my older son over and tell him if he dont do something about it he'd get his ass kicked by me.So they throw him a beating and he runs off crying.All the mothers were up in arms.Next day I get a note saying I have to come to the school.I get there and the kids father is there too.I get the expected speach about how they wont tolerate my sons defending themselves,blah,blah blah.I tell the principal and the kids father if my son gets harassed at all by this punk who was apparently a problem a number of times,I'd break the principals ass first and then the father.My sons never had a problem with anybody in the neighborhood again.The kid they beat up had a rep for being a thug,until that day.Kids have to taught to defend themselves.My older son was a little confused about "fair fight".I told them both,fuck a fair fight.if someone fucks with you or your family everything is fair.I am sure if this happened in this day and age we would have been in big trouble.

I had a similar experience during the 90s when I was in school. An illegal immigrant pulled a switchblade on me one day, roughly around the time I was getting my black belt. Fortunately I was smart enough to not be an idiot regardless and encourage it, and ended with him simply threatening me with it and didn't escalate. (Not going to risk getting cut just to prove a point.)
The school's response was they wanted to put me in another school since I was "having problems" with the kid. They kid brought a fucking knife to a school he wasn't even supposed to be legally attending -- they were batshit crazy. So my parents told the school district to fuck off trying to move me, and they'd sue if they did. In the end, they moved the illegal to another school, but of course didn't remove him from the system.
This wasn't the first time, mind you, the school district didn't want to stick up for me being picked on -- hence, why my parents encouraged me doing some martial arts in the first place.

my son had 2 situations. First when he was in elementary school a kid kept throwing rocks and stuff at him in recess. He took the kid down and held him till the monitors came. They first accused him of being the aggressor but he replied, i complained to you for a week that he was throwing rocks at me and you did nothing. If i wanted to hurt him I would be doing ground and pound on his face. -He didn't get into trouble.
Second time a kid that used to be his friend just flipped out and started verbally attacking my son and saying how he was going to rape his sister one day. We told the principal but of course nothing happened. We told my son that it was going to get physical one day and just stop the attack and not to retaliate. Well a few days later the kid kicked my son. Next day again in front of the principal who called in this kids father. After all the bullshit of not my kid blah blah blah the kid admitted to kicking my son and saying what he said.
Now comes the good part.
My son didn't talk about it at school so that he wouldn't become a target but he was a Black belt in jujitsu and competed in tournaments.
I said "listen carefully to what i am about to say in front of your principal and your father. You got your 1 free shot in because we knew it was coming but [I turned to my son} son, he is not to connect with you again and if he goes to hit you i want him in the hospital with something broken." Principal gets apoplectic as does the father. I said my son is not a punching bag and this brat just admitting to kicking him if the school can't protect him he will protect himself. And we walked out of the meeting repeating Something Broken.
School talent show i asked permission to bring in weapons and my son did a demonstration of disarming me with knives and swords. He tossed me around the stage too [240lb]. After that, although he was always short for his age, no one ever picked on him again. [btw, school gym mats are not nearly as padded as at a dojo, I was sore for quite a while.
