I have a couple of acquaintances that knew this guy. He apparently was having some marital problems and unfortunately for his family, he took the cowardly way out.

Ugh.. I think I'd have to say the "cowardly way out" really doesn't even nearly cut it here. Deciding to kill himself alone, may (or may not in some cases) have been the cowardly way out. This guy though shot his wife, killed his son, and even killed the family dog (WTF ?).
This was a complete psychopath.. and worse yet, one with a badge. Who knows what this kind of fruitcake may have done with that power. Of course only cops should have guns though...

In any case though, my thoughts go out to his wife and anyone else left to have to live with the damages of his horrible actions.

Sad, but at least he wasn't there; that's something I guess. I suppose that all signs point to the mother/wife burying two sons instead of one if he had been there.

I imagine it's an.. interesting (not sure that's really the right word here) thing to you, knowing people that may have known him well. Truth is the best thing for you to do is probably just stay out of it entirely, at least beyond the inevitable, as it might surely be a very touchy subject for some. I have to say though that if I were in your shoes my sense of curiosity would having me wanting to know if this kind of thing was so completely out the blue that no one could have seen it coming.. or if maybe it could have been prevented if people saw signs and tried to intervene somehow, Still though, as I said, probably not the best line of inquiry toward any who may or may not have any harsh feelings about any such implication..so, probably best to just mind your own (as is almost always the case.. but man, I would be left curious)

I remember reading something about these situations. It never made sense to me. Why kill the whole family before committing suicide?

Apparently when people get to this state of mind they see the world as some sort of complete disaster. I'm oversimplifying but these people think the world is so bad they can't contemplate leaving their family to suffer through life. So they take them out as well.

Not sure I buy it but I've never understood the behavior of taking your family with you.

Curious? Yes , but not to the point that I need to know any more than I already do. It’s possible that more info. Will be put out via the news media or I’ll hear more trickle down info. From my acquaintances. Beyond that I won’t go poking around in someone else’s business. As to wether or not it could have been preventable, who knows. only the other family members or close friends can answer that. I do know from first hand experience that people on that edge ( suicidal ) can be Very adept at hiding their true feelings / intentions until they decide to act . Selfishly like this guy did, or foolishly by hurting themselves or committing suicide.

I had a friend that was totally stressed out…he had put his brother in a home because he could no longer take care of him. I would talk to him just about every night. Help him at the farm and invite him to dinner often. He went from crying to what I thought was he’s good now…laughing and joking all the time. He wasn’t good he made up his mind. You wanna go, go! But make it a solitary event. There's even some states that you could move to, go through the necessary requirements, and do it the right way! Make your piece, say your goodbyes, and go...
