Guy with PTSD isn't feeling all there. His wife calls it in and the police are elated to find an 'arsenal' in his house. They later find him at a hotel in Colonie with his rifle and high capacity magazine.

We might get some mileage from this in court on the 50 round magazine.

On the other hand. Sounds like he had a forged pistol permit and some explosive devices as well. So that won't play well.

"Grenade launcher" aka 37mm non-firearm, non regulated, flare launcher. I'm especially impressed with the 5 or so scary black powder guns as well as the flare pistol. Sure he violated some BS state laws with magazines and features. Most likely if this had happened in VT or PA is would have been a catch and release, not a grand show of enforcement.

What about the forged pistol permit? That, IMO, may be his most serious offense. Forging govt documents is highly frowned upon.......

A Knox man was charged with multiple weapons offenses after police allegedly found multiple high-powered weapons, including grenades, a grenade launcher and an AR-15 style rifle at his home, the Albany County Sheriff’s office said.

On Sunday Albany County Sheriff’s officers received a call for an emotionally disturbed man at a home in Knox. Police said Edward J. Reis, 43, texted a woman that, “he wanted to go to Arizona and euthanize himself,” and police were unable to find him.


When deputies arrived at his home they found a locked room that stored over a dozen firearms, explosives, grenades, a grenade launcher and materials commonly used to make explosive devices.

"It was an insane scene," said Sheriff Craig Apple. "We have no idea what his intentions were."

Reis was the only person ever allowed in the room, deputies were told.

When they discovered the explosives and tripwires deputies drew back and called State Police, Apple said.

Reis also allegedly had a forged New York State Pistol Permit. The State Police Bomb Disposal Unit assisted with removing the explosives.

Apple said he did not know what Reis' intentions were beyond self-harm but added that deputies did not find anything that indicated he planned on attacking others.

Family members told law enforcement that Reis suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and had served in the Special Forces. Several publications for the 109 Airlift Wing mention an Edward Reis, including a promotion to technical sergeant and a listing for being awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal. A call to the 109th's public information office was not immediately returned.

This shows that no matter what system is in place, it affects only law abiding citizens, not a criminal element so I believe it shows better than worse. It's like prohibition or drugs...law abiding citizens comply...."deplorables" don't.

I see zero reason to defend this guy. The cops didn’t exactly burst into his house without reason. This is a “mass shooter” waiting to happen based just on that article alone. I wonder what kind of explosives he had.

Idk guy might have been off his rocker, I am not a mental health expert but the explosives are probably tannerite, grenade launch is 37mm flair gun. "High cap mag" is only a nys garbage infringment. NYS pistol permits are bs and go against the constitution, to me the gov is forging docs. The only thing this guy might be guilty of is being off his meds but, tbd.

At 16, I had a driver's license from Ohio attesting to the fact that I was 19, and a college ID from Ohio State U. as a back-up. Both compliments of the tiny ads in the back of Popular Science magazine back in the day (1974).

Can't compare apples and oranges... Although I am the first in line when it comes to "Freedom" from Gov't intrusion into law abiding citizens lives, you are responsible to comply with the State Laws in which you live, or you're just like any other criminal... This isn't a case where he ventured into the State and unbeknownst to him he violated a law he was unfamiliar with because as you said, everywhere else it would be laughed off. He resides here, Good or Bad!

The unfortunate circumstances surrounding this is like everything else in life! Timing! Bad timing for this guy that's for sure... PTSD, Airborne, a so called "cache" of weapons and destructive devices (real or not, they are now what the police labeled them)... While everything is still fresh from the Church slaughter in Texas! Yeah... They're going to pin him up as a poster child in what's wrong with the world and how good the Safe-Act is working to protect you and your children.

Poor bastard! But hey, maybe he'll get some help that he needs... Maybe the wife knows him better than all of us who sit here and judge. I just hope they take his service to us all into consideration and not ignore it like he is some demon!

I am guessing that the police prevented either a fairly major catastrophe or a suicide. Job well done. Kudos to Reis' wife for alerting authorities especially in light of the alleged claims that he has PTSD and seemed to be wanting to harm himself. Too bad no one contacted authorities about the lunatic in TX before he went berserk.
