Hello all, so I’m modding my Fightlite SCR with the Fightlite aluminum 13” hand guard and a Vortex strike eagle 1-8x scope. My main question is, in installing the new hand guard, i don’t have a torque wrench to meet the suggested pressure when tightening the components. I am being a bit cheap I guess but I’d rather avoid spending a minimum of $50 on one. I would rather do the add on myself. What do you all do or think? Buy the torque wrench, just tighten to feel or take it to a gunsmith. I have no problems doing the work but don’t want my scr shaking apart after 100 rounds /images/smilies/icon_smile.gif. Thanks.

I would recommend it. But it is your gun if you feel comfortable with out knowing what torque it is go for it.

It's not absolutely necessary, you can do that by feel if you are mechanically inclined. It has to be tight, but not to the point where you damage the threads. That said, buy a torque wrench, it's a good tool to have and often needed.
Good to be reminded. Thanks. I can only imagine the damage I could have done making that mistake. Any good standard options when it comes to a consumer torque wrench.tons on eBay but what the right one to buy?

My cousin always said that you'll never regret buying a tool. He's also is a machinist by trade and a big tool guy so his advice may be a bit biased, but over the years I've come to agree with him over the years. I've never regretted following his advice.

the German Torque tools are the best .. It has two settings: “gutensnug”, and “guntentight” no conversions charts or math skills needed ..

Just use a regular wrench and say "click" when it seems tight enough. That's all the torque wrench does!

why not learn a useful skill .. .. hobbies cost $$$ .. suck it up

NYC apartment = less storage and workspace than optimal . I'm definitely buying the torque wrench for swapping sights etc but after watching a step by step floating hand guard install, it looks like I should really have a vice and receiver block as well, my dining table is my workshop

was mine too at a time .. had the 340 ski do motor on it for a full rebuild a few time .. .. where is that torq wrench .. oh don't have one . LOL ..
motor ran great .. fking muffler kept falling off thou .. LOL..
btw .. i do have a few torq wrenches now .. when i use them is all task dependent ..
my little man cave is 16 x 16 .. , table saw , radial arm saw , wood stove in the corner .. .. still have room to work on things and reload ammo and store tools

Get a used one. There are used tool places all over.
Barrel nut you can do without torque wrench. The tighter the better and it's hard to damage the threads. For scope mounting get something like Wheeler brand.
One torque wrench will not do both jobs.

Yes if you want to be sure you are not stretching the bolt or screw more than needed. Bolts and screws fasten by being stretched. To much stretch causes failure. We cant always measure bolt stretch soo we comprise and use a torque measurement to have a more accurate method then just guessing. Too lose and failure is going to happen. Too tight and it will fail to hold as well. If you are torquing a scope down too tight and you will crush a perfectly good scope. So your dime guess or not guess?
Advance Auto has a tool barrow program, you buy it and have 45 days to use/return. This might be the way to go?

YES buy a torque wrench. You are a real man and this is a real man's essential tool. You may not use it a lot but there are times you'll need it in life, from this to putting on lugs on your car, installing a hitch on your car, etc.
Let me advise you this: When in life you need a tool try and borrow it. If you can't, buy it. I only have one or two tools in an ever-growing collection that, many years later, I've still only used once. Sometimes I'm shocked at how useful a tool becomes in ways I could never have imagined (angle grinder is at the top of this list), and most I use on various projects.
I have a neighbor across the street. This is a grown man, like 40 years old. He had to come over a couple years back for wrenches. He literally didn't own any.

I'm all for buying tools but wouldn't recommend using a 1/2 drive on a scope ring/mount. Also most torque wrenches aren't accurate at extremes of stated range (particularly at lower end of range I think). You shouldn't use same tool for lug nuts and delicate work it's like using a sledge hammer to put finish nails in trim lol...
