I obtained a hunting permit to a nearby forest preserve. Apparently, they're having a problem with too many deer. The only stipulation is that I need to use a bow, crossbow, shotgun, or muzzleloader. Out of these, the muzzleloader option was intriguing.
I bought this inexpensive and light CVA Wolf 50 cal. in-line muzzle loader. The rifle uses 209 shotgun primers for ignition and reports to be able to take up to 150 grains of black powder and 300 grain bullets.
I took it to the range today to play with a new load. I got these Sierra Pro-Hunter 45 caliber 300 grain HP that they recommend for 45-70 cartridges. I loaded using these sabots to get a snug fit and used two 50 gr Pyrodex pellets. for a charge.
I chronographed the muzzle velocity to around 1630 fps. This is about 200 fps slower than a 45-70. The bullets seemed to hit with power, even at 200 yards. But, the ballistic app suggests an ethical range limit to about 180 yards.
Anyhow, the gun is fun to shoot and has a satisfying boom. I'm happy to take any suggestion you have.
