I've had one for about ten years and only used it once or twice. Personally I think given the modern options you're better off using a Sawyer Squeeze on conjunction with Aqua Mira that'll kill the stuff that might slip past the Sawyer.

I have stocked up on them and sawyer filters. I wouldnt use one from a mud puddle and definately not from a stagnant pond, simply for the sake of prolonging the life one, not because they don't work. I have used them on running streams and they last a long time (and I am still alive).

pond water .. same as water skiing on Conesus lake and drinking it when you wipe out .
look at all them little flavor savors swimming around to boost your immune system ..
under this steel cover is crystal clear really cold water with some times a snake or spider in it ..
never filtered it .. or boiled it.. and i drank a lot from it .. since i was like 5yrs old
I have no problem swimming in lakes, nor making my kids go jump in a lake or go tubing behind a boat. I'm quite certain they get a mouth full of water being dragged face first about a foot above the water at some point and definitely when they wipe out. Ehhhh they survive
Im sure the life straw works fine for what it's intended to do. I have life straws and Sawyer minis. Hoping I never "need" them, but if I do I'll be glad to have them and I'm confident I will be just fine using them.

Well.... There are some microbes and virus who of they could talk would say "FAAFO" but I get the premise.
I haven't been the dad that stops their kid eating food that falls on the ground. I dunno maybe I'm a horrible person for not doing so, but I genuinely think I'm helping my kids by letting them get dirty. Letting them be exposed to germs. That's healthy and natural and good for their immune system.
I think people who are clean freaks and sanitize everything and live in a sterile world get sick more than anyone and develop weak immune systems. That's not the way.
My cousin is Uber smart, she's a pediatrician and has been published numerous times and is a lecturer blah blah blah. She did a thesis on why kids who grew up on farms tended to be healthier.... Just saying....
This is the constant argument I get into with my wife. She's overprotective with the baby and sanitizes the shit out of everything.
I constantly have to explain to her that little that won't kill the kid helps to bolster their immune system. She's a Paramedic also so she should know better, but that motherly instinct/irrational fear clouds her judgement at times.

Exactly. The entire premise behind vaccines is supposed to be light exposure to diseases which releases anti-bodies and develops your immune system. When Europeans first came to the America's the natives immune systems here had never seen many of the germs the Euros brought and it kicked the shit out of them.

That was a ridiculous stupid statement by a teacher. As a kid I lived near what was once classified as one of the most polluted lakes in the nation. Polluted with methlymercury and sulfates. Although methylmercury is one of the most dangerous forms of mercury pollutants fish still lived in the lake. Drinking it would have been highly detrimental to your health.
I have been using Life Straw for many years. I take them each and every time I go off on the paths of the wilderness. I use them all of the time.
I have one that fits into a water bottle lid, fill the bottle and drink away.
Never a need to carry untold amounts of water when hiking.
I have not used the straws in roadside puddles, of mucky water. I only use them if the water appears to be clean.
So far, so good. Have not gotten sick due to their use.

I have used them. I keep one as a back up to my primary system. But all these carry systems are really designed for back country use. City and rural contamination such as oil, gas, ice road sprays, chemically fortified salt and other chemicals that leech into the local water supply I would NOT use it. That type of contamination cannot be dealt with by any of these systems. In all cases of use, careful selection of the water supply you intend to use is necessary. Even in back country situations, boiling is always a better option. Emergency use the last resort and always use the consumption testing method to test for reactions.

If you guys have never had giardia, I wouldnt wish it on anyone. The last thing you'll need in a grid-down scenario is something like that, or dysentery. That killed a LOT of people in the pre-industrial age. Pretty easy for us to forget stuff like that when we can turn the tap and out comes water that for 99% of us is easily consumable straight from the faucet.
