Donald Trump Vows 200% Tariff on John Deere if It Moves Manufacturing to Mexico​


Former President Donald Trump, flanked by two John Deere tractors, said Monday that if the company moves manufacturing to Mexico, he will impose a 200-percent tariff on the products it imports to the United States.

Trump’s pledge to protect American manufacturing jobs came during a roundtable in Smithton, Pennsylvania, with farmers, former Acting Director of National Security Ric Grenell, Republican Pennsylvania Senate nominee Dave McCormick, and former U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY).

As Breitbart News reported, John Deere announced hundreds of layoffs in June that took effect August 30, as the company prepared layoffs at a plant in East Moline, Illinois, and in Davenport, Iowa.

Great news.

Deeres previous foray into Mexico to build tractor engines resulted in total failure, and shitty products. Engines returned to Moline.

China plan on an EV plant in Mexico to ship tariff free EV cars to the USA under a trade loophole...Trump said NO if he is elected.

If Trump succeeds that means China telling Biden to get out of Afghanistan, so that China can control Afghanistans lithium deposits, may be in vain costing China trillions.

Wonderful but what about all the other companies that have left? Why only JD? Not a fan of doing this just to one company.

I agree. Target all of them.

NAFTA is fucking stupid and should never have been passed. It helps Mexico and hurts the US.

From a business standpoint I see why companies move to Mexico. Why not - pay them 1/4 of what they'd pay for labor in the US and sell goods for the same price.

If he really wanted to threaten them he could look into their anticompetitive repair practices.

There are a lot of existing g laws they violate there that the .gov just overlooks.

Absolutely Spat! That was the deal breaker for my wife an i when we bought another new tractor in 2017, besides being over $5k+ more in price for the same type of tractor in the Kubota brand. We happily bought the Kubota over the John Deere. Wife an i had always bought JD`s for many years, that trend ended.

A 1/4 of what they get paid here? Probably less. I was talking to a migrant worker a while back and he told me they would get paid $10 per day for an 8-hour shift where as here they get $18-$19/hour and all expenses paid except food. Surprisingly they even get travel to and from their home country paid by the farmer and pay less taxes here. So they love coming here and we wonder why farms are getting shutdown.

That’s the point. Making it harder to afford a JF tractor will make you look elsewhere and possibly make them stay in the USA due to increased sales costs causing lower volume of sales. I don’t have an issue with tariffs but again targeting just JD with 200% is wrong. We need to cut other regulations and red tape to make it easier to operate in the USA.

If you really want to fix the system, outlaw corporate ownership of any stock except it's own.

If you want to pay Vanguard to manage your portfolio, that's fine, but they can't own the stock, only humans can.

It would also end all the shell company shenanigans that allow people to obfuscate their influence.

It will never happen, *because* it would fix all these problems. Problems that the powerful find very convenient.
