I’m moving here in the next month or so.

I’ve asked before, but now it’s crunch time.

I have a shotgun I’m just going to bring up here. Double barrel, kind of an Elmer Fudd kinda thing, should be fine, IIRC.

I’m up here in Rochester until tomorrow when I return to Texas to pick up our stuff.

I’d like a bit of a last word on bringing my revolvers up. Smitty 10-9 and a Llama Comanche .22. I believe I need to apply (somewhere) to get a permit just to possess them, at which time I can have them shipped to an FFL and I can pick them up. I’ll be in Monroe county, should I just go for a carry license? Would it be wise to try for a carry license in TX even though I’m practicing constitutional carry down there? Any tips or tricks would help, I’m not looking to carry per se, but I do want to have them up here ASAP.

The laws are convoluted (purposely so?), and I’d like to see what gives me the best leverage and quickest path to getting my other guns up here, legally.

NY could care less about other gun rules, you will need to get a permit from your N.Y. County.
Then ffl to ffl , I belive.

That’s the part I don’t quite understand. I have deep(ish) family roots here, I have one reference I think I can get right off the bat, who’s not related by blood or marriage. If I need others who can be so related, I have all the ones I need. They don’t even like guns but they know I’m not the gun owner anybody should be worried about.

I visited a gun store yesterday here in Monroe county, they made it seem fairly easy.

I have my Ma who can store my guns for a while (my Pa died a month ago), but I don’t know how long she’s going to be around there. A year, I think that’s solid but four years, maybe not?

Monroe county seems *fairly* lenient from my research, but the “may issue” status makes this distressingly unclear.

If only...

...family is first for me and that’s why I’m up here to begin with. But man, it would be nice to have those in charge actually treat me like a human and assume I’ll have a gun around in good faith. Texas does, and I’ll wager there’s a lot more folks whose family trees have no branches down there. And yet it’s still pretty good. Nobody is worried about going down the street to a store or to get a burger just because guns.

Closest I have is a guy who helped the City PD where I’ve been living with their firearms training. He did a fair bit of training for me, and I know he’d write a letter on my behalf, but I don’t know that it would do any good whatsoever.

I'm going to piss on your already ruined parade and add that Rochester has it's own permit process that differs from Monroe County! (Yeah , stupid) You still apply at the MO. Co clerks office but it's different and more paperwork. All this applies IF you are a city resident, if not disregard the above. It took my wife 23 months to get her permit and she's never even had a parking ticket and been a Rochester resident most all her life.

Every county is different, and often times individual towns have different rules than other towns within same county.

The town I live in only requires 4 non family references in the county.

I choose a neighbor, a friend, wife's friend and a correction officer. 2 of them already had unrestricted pistol license, It may have helped that i got a female and a correction officer friend as reference I figured that would help my application.

I got unrestricted on my initial application.

Took about a year total. Couple trips downtown and and the police station for interview, also had to pay for digital finger printing too.


It can be accomplished. Don't get discouraged. Start the process soon. Remember even though you are in the people's republic of NY, you're still a citizen with rights. Make them honor them. They're yours.

Be thankful you're not. For many reasons. And I believe it's very hard to get in the city.

Don't get discouraged. Hell they even gave @DoD1776 his.

Start the process and stay the course. As much of a pain in ass to get it, once you get it, you actually have a ton of rights. There are actually very few places you cant legally carry once you get it. (basically just schools and government)

Another question, one which I already think I know the answer to: I won’t be able to file anything until I have established residency and have a NYS driver license?

I’m going to have to see if I can “transfer” my CDL up here.

A buddy had a heck of a time transferring his CDL and M endorsements from Oregon to NY. They dropped his M endorsement. M is motorcycle. I don't even know why he even did, since he's leaving in a few months to go down south.......
