I submitted my application in late December 2024, the deputy on duty reviewed it for 15 minutes uploaded my 16 hour safety certificate and NYS drivers license and said I was logged into the system, I just had to fix one item and re-submit but did not need to re submit the certificate as I was in the system. (I did add it, had 2 originals)
Came back 3 days later and physically handed it to the same deputy.
3 months later I called to check on status ( a friend recently got his permit, said in 3 months they called him in for fingerprints) The deputy stated they had no record of me in the system and no permit application was found.
They conducted an investigation and found nothing; after pleading with him and explaining how long it takes to get all the signatures from references and original letters of dispositions, he agreed to accept my copies of all my documents which is expressly forbidden per instructions, all must be originals. (Best advice I was given is make copies of EVERY document required, as they may call months later to ask questions and you may not remember accurately)
I submitted my copies of the permit and a few months later I received a call that my original permit was located. ( Bear in mind the deputy uploaded my drivers license and safety course into the computer system and later told me nothing was found anywhere)
I got an appointment 5 months from time of original submission to be finger printed which starts the 6 month clock in which they must turn it around with an approval or denial.
I found out yesterday my file is now in the hands of a judge and I am 5 months 10 days from date of finger printing and expect an answer by the end of November if they adhere to the 6 month timeline.
I was having a hard time finding forums with up-to-date info on peoples experience in Dutchess county going through the process.
My buddy who got his permit last year said the detective called him needing clarification on past history incidents and then had an interview with the judge.
I was told by the Sherrif's office they have done away with both, and I was never called.
I felt a need to post this information as this may be less intimidating for others starting the process and may fear a quiz on their past history.
My advice to anyone starting the permit process is make copies of everything, call up in 4 weeks to verify you are in the system and call every month to check on status to be fingerprinted and ask what the current average wait time is, then call after 2 or 3 months to check on status .
Had I not called to check I may have never been called, as they somehow lost a physical file and 2 items entered into their computer system.
Do not be intimidated to call and respectfully inquire, the deputy that assisted me was very helpful, professional and sympathetic to my bizarre experience and said they have never lost a file in the entire history of the Dutchess county Sheriffs office.
I have my own thoughts on why this happened but will refrain from sharing at this time.
I hope this long post encourages others to share their timeline with others to set realistic expectations as the timelines do seem to change depending on how many applicants are in the que, and of course your own background and if you moved a lot. They contact every police agency in every town you have lived in for the past 20 years and check "call outs" meaning if the police were called to your residence or other, even with no charges filed, its a comprehensive picture of your history and interaction ( if any) with local LEO.
When you submit your permit application it not only contains your personal information, it has sensitive data on 4 up standing members of the community who gave you a character reference, plus several months of leg work to collect all the required documents , as such I feel, and suggested the Sherrif change protocol and give you a written receipt of proof that it was submitted and complete.
When I submitted the copies, I requested and received a receipt due to the extreme circumstances and already being delayed of my constitutional rights.
