EDC - First aid

I started carrying a tourniquet when I began pistol carry. Additionally, now I am trying the Blue force gear microtrauma kit worn inside a pants pocket. Considering all that it holds it is very compact (about the size of a fist).

What do you carry for first aid?

Just make sure anyone that carries those are trained.

I had to go to some training for corporation insurance purposes as its all about insurance and liability but it was hostile environment awareness training as the corporation cares little about us little people past "legalities and costs. However it was about working in hostile countries and the training was great. It was held in Westchester county and about as close to NYC I would ever get. 20 people in our class, 10 from my company and about 10 from news organizations such as ABC. They used many role players who had assault weapons and they told us they were NYC police (good with that). There was a whole lot of first aid training and we got drilled on applying tourniquet to ourselves and other modern techniques. The company doing the training was British (such as a level of Blackwater) but not unlike our best defense contractors who were former SOF. The first aid training did teach me to have exactly what this poster has shown and my company bought us the first aid kit they were selling and I took it with me to Karachi, Pakistan, (another armpit of the world). My work was with their equivalent to our SEALS so at their compound, all secure, it was just getting there, the daily security issue. Once we show them how to do things and our stuff, we get rapport with them and protection. Most countries take care of their invited guests. The course I found was for news folks trying to be independent on battle fields and avoid being captured or shot at. This is much harder. My international travels and would have us embedded with military customers and is much more secure. However the first aid and knowing what to do and having what is needed is so important. I'm due back for refresher training this year with the same company and looking forward to it.

Carry what you know and can use effectively. Needle chest decompression is difficult for the trained in the field. some quick clotting gauze, a couple tampons and an israli dressing will cover most GSW and are easy to use even under stress. If you want good training, join a volly ambulance service, get whatever level of EMT/AEMT you want, then spend some time doing it, all the training and gear is bullshit unless you can use it when you need to. EDC gear for medical is great, but remember you will most likely be the one having to apply it, so having a full surgical suite in a mobile unit won't do any good but if you can't use it effectively, then its pointless.

That being said, that looks like a very nice simple and functional kit for the basics, most likely you can find it all and a pouch for 1/2 what you spend on a 'kit" . Since you have it, look for ways to expand the capabilities while retaining the compact nature of that kit.

One last thing having a "cheat sheet" for how to treat some things, while not as good as training, having the information available to use the equipment you have, even without any training can make a huge difference.

I carry this D.A.R.K. Trauma Kit Gen 4 when on the range or hunting.

The rest of the time I have this Pocket D.A.R.K. Trauma Kit in my backpack or pocket.

Have also taken training Direct Action Response Training - Marietta, OH - 21-22 Oct 2017 with them.

Your mind is by far the most important first aid EDC.

Far too many people buy First Aid gear with no idea how to use it.

I also keep a DARK trama kit in both vehicles as well as other First Aid supplies. Have taken a penetrating trauma class that Chris Fry (MDTS) hosted a while back. Also took a basic Red Cross CPR/First Aid class as well as 16 hr Wilderness First Aid class last fall. I carry first aid kit while hiking, camping, at range, etc but not for EDC.

For all 3 of my bags I make my own first aid. Each gets identical stuff. Liquid iodine for cuts and water purification, electric tape, bandages,band aids of all sizes and types, lighter, magnesium blocks, triple antibiotic ointment, qtips, cotton balls, bandana, scissors, sew kit(multiple uses)tourniquet,bug spray, peroxide,strike anywhere matches,travel toothpaste and toothbrush,deodorant, 50 tylonol 650, 50 aspirins, LifeStraw, tattoo rubber gloves. Now that you read all that, thats my BOB first aid. I don't carry anything for an EDC except the 2 bandaids in my wallet but one of those BOBs are in my trunk. Sooooo I'll be alright from the walk in or the walk out of wherever I'm going
