Electricity is Cheap But for How Long

I have been looking into solar and based on my rough calculations it would take about 27 years to break even of electricity stays at .1145 cents per Kwh.

But what are the odds that electricity stays that cheap? NY already shutdown one nuclear power plant. San Diego last year was paying .54 cents per Kwh. At that price the system would pay for itself in about 4 years. These numbers are based on $20k system working 24/365. I know those variables can change.

Other thoughts are what is your food worth? Heating/cooling? Cooking? I know wood is available but for how long? NY is already trying take it away.

How long before China kills the grid?

I also know this could put a target on your house.

Just things going through my head as I see the changes going on in the world.

You can easily have a grid tied system that also includes local storage.

That's what I have going in. Going to use the grid to reduce the wear on my batteries. Sell some during the day, buy it back at night to avoid cycling the batteries as deeply.

But if the grid is unavailable my setup will switch to offgrid in 4 milliseconds. Not even the most sensitive electronics will be affected.

Some suppliers, Central Hudson being one, will not hook up if you have battery storage connected to your solar.

A friend just told me he did solar a while back and with all the incentives he got a $20,000 system and paid about $5,000 out of pocket. I think it was 5-6 years ago so not sure if incentives changed or not. I have very little south facing roof space so it’s not worth it for me. He has a pool and said he never pays anything and gets $30-$40 back per year. He’s connected to the grid.

be careful, Many towns and municipalities WILL NOT let you install solar WITHOUT a grid-tie in. Its the towns utilities that are afraid they will lose millions of dollars if everyone were to install a off grid system.

You can install batteries, after the fact, then what are they going to do?? they will be buying back the electricity anyway??

Just love how once again I need "Permission" or a "Permit" from Government for something that is supposed to be mine.
