I don't see how you can justify us importing them while American tech workers are laid off in record numbers.

That's like if a guy who does landscaping comes into my yard with a chem sprayer of bleach and goes to town, and then tells me I need to fix the brown spots in my lawn and he's the man to do it.

Because there is a chronic shortage of competent tech workers.

Yes, some get laid off, it's the nature of tech work that the companies are perpetually reorganizing. But in my experience, anyone who isn't a slacker or fuck up can find a new job in a couple months. Typically with a raise.

For most of my career I have had headhunters cold call me just to see if I might be interested in changing jobs. That's not a sign of a glut of workers.

Sure, every few years the cycle ebbs and there might be a bit of a dry spell, but 80% of the time there is way more demand than supply.

Coders are going to be replaced by AI in the next 5 to 10 years.

And the smart ones are learning how to get an AI to do what you want it to.

It isn't a simple as "just tell it what to code" LOL.

We're a long long way off from some manager just typing "make me a web site to sell my stuff" I to chatGPT and getting what he wants out.

And there is *a lot* of skill transfer from old school coding to the next gen "AI operator".

Context tuning and prompt engineeeing. I'm well familiar with it.

That still doesn't change the fact H1B is used to exploit foreigners and try to underpay Americans for their valuable skills.

Im not going to work 60-80 hour weeks under threat of losing my green card and no American should have to compete against that in their own country. I know everything about overtime that I need to know. Namely: Overtime doesn't make you rich, it just makes you tired. In 30 years the only people that will remember you working lots of overtime are your kids - they'll remember you not being there.
