Just finished a two part course with EMS tactical group called "Civilian response to trauma" (Basic & Advanced). The class was held in Rochester with Rochester Personal Defense hosting the class. The basic class was informative and set the ground work for the more advanced skills. Some of the topics covered were a basic look at human circulatory system, mindset, tourniquet application, Israeli bandage application, and airway management. The advanced class, which I took the same day, built on that knowledge by taking the basic skills and applying them hands on and adding new topics such as buddy carrying and wound packing. The theme of the advanced class was centered around active shooter or mass casualty incident i.e. Boston bombing. There is a lot of hands on learning, heavy emphasis on tourniquets, we did a wound packing on a real piece of meat, and even did treatment in dynamic situations, and in the dark. Overall it was well worth the 8 hours put into it, especially for a civilian like me who has never been exposed to some of these concepts. Brad and Andy are both more than qualified, both being working EMT's and Andy is ex Army, both gun guys which made a cool learning dynamic, and were both friendly. To sum it up, if you've been carrying around that IFAK but arent quite sure what to do with it in a real life scenario THIS IS THE CLASS!
