so even if Kavanaugh does become the next Justice, I really dont see it doing much in terms of the 2A.

Yes he has gone on the record stating (paraphrasing and could be taking his words out of context until he says something even more concrete) "assault weapons bans are unconstitutional"... But TBH its no different really for getting a case in front of the court than when Kennedy was on the bench.

The fact that Kennedy sided with the 2A in pretty much the only real case in the last 30 years shows that its not about winning SCOTUS cases its about getting them to be heard.

As it sits now the last one appointed replaced a 2a supporter and the next one is going to be appointing a 2a supporter(lite). If there wasn't enough to get a case in front of the last SCOTUS, why should we think they will be taking any cases in the next say 5 years?

with that all being said it sounds like 3 solid votes, Thomas being the only one sounding like they want to hear any cases, what other 2 locks would there be?

It's a shame that the Safe Act (or the post clinton AWB modified version) most likely will never get that high, but we still have Cali and everyone only ever caring about that shit states lose of gun rights

I've heard a lot of speculation that because Kennedy was the swing vote, there was really no way to know which way he would go on another 2A case, so they were reluctant to take one up. I'm not sure how much of that I buy.

That said, Thomas is hungry for one. I believe that Gorsuch is hungry for one. He states as much when he joined Thomas in his dissent after Peruta was denied. That dissent was a pretty harsh rebuke on the rest of the court. I suspect, based upon his history, that Kavanaugh will want to take one up. That gives us three. With the current custom in place, there needs to be one more vote in order to grant cert. That vote would likely come from Alito, as he claims to be an originalist. Roberts is definitely not a lock, as he has turned out to be more moderate.

That's my read, anyway.

2A is just a touchy subject no matter how you look at it. I think they would find a way to NOT take cases no matter who is in SCOTUS. They are damned if they take a case damned if they don't so they would rather just keep things the way they are and not cause any waves.

In regards to the 2A Hardin was your guy. I figured he was a long shot at best.
Of the remaining front runners, IMO Kavanaugh is better than one and on par with the other.
I just hope he can shake off any of the mud and slime that may have adhered to him after spending so much time in the swamp.
Let's hope for the best. We all know it could have been much worse. Even disasterous.

I think this is good for us. I have always believed that the reason the gun control issue never hit the SCOTUS is because neither side wanted to see it go there due to an uncertain ruling.
Now that we have some control over the SCOTUS, I wouldn't be at all surprised if gun control, and 2A issues get there.

REMEMBER, it could have gone either way before, and EVERYONE was worried about being on the bad end of any ruling that came out of it.

The thing is that "bans" are unconstitutional... But regulations are not! Even when they are so much a burden, it is a defacto ban! Like needing to prove necessity in some municipalities. Bottom line is, yes, there will be no earth shattering moves in the SCOTUS with "any" new justice appointment. But it will lend a slight tilting towards certain ideologies for sure. One more and maybe over a decade or two, the flavor of the court may change. But not tomorrow, or this year, or next!

All I would want is for all Rights to be applied with "strict" scrutiny... This simple thing would end all issues! Either it is, or it isn't... No middle ground, no differences across jurisdictions, etc.
