Why is gambling a "sin"? People are taking their money they earned and doing what they want with it. Why should you or anyone else get to dictate what people can or can't do with the proceeds of their labor? They earned it. It's theirs, not yours. If you don't want to gamble, don't. That's your choice. Personally, I don't gamble, but it isn't my place to tell others they can't.

Bottom line, "Sin" and "Sin taxes" are just a way for the government to trick people into letting them steal more of their money.

The "sin" isnt gambling, its what addiction to gambling can do. Like when a guy loses his entire paycheck and his kids have to go hungry, or he steals so he can gamble .Maybe he loses his job, or cant pay his bills. For Most people gambling is pretty harmless. But for some people its a tragedy.

I knew a guy that blew off the wrong bookie , guys were sent out from NYC to take care of the problem , they went to his fathers house and told him if he ever wanted to see his kid alive he better pay up the next day . The father paid up , but it almost cost them

Well I’ll pay for them eventually. They will go broke and get a divorce then the wife will end up on the tax system. The guy will comity suicide and take up my services. It always falls to the tax payers.
Oh and now they are licking their chops saying we have more money to spend, but what happened when more and more people leave? They will just keep spending the same money.

I think the question this raises, is how we reconcile our free will with the cardinal virtues. We teach our children math, science, history... and yet we don't focus on questions of duty / justice, temperance, courage, nor impart the wisdom to know better.

We fall short of raising good people, because those values don't make for good consumers. That's why they're not a priority. I'm a capitalist, but I'm also all for imparting virtue that tempers over consumption. That's where parenting and community come into play, and we've lost that.
