Several years ago Erie County got 48" of snow in the afternoon that cut the county in half. People were stranded on the Thruway for 36+ hours. They ran into the storm and got stuck. I was watching the storm on internet radar and said screw it, slept overnight at the office. The warning was there, some people choose not to heed it. Sometimes you can avoid bad stuff.
FWIW, I went to a thrift store several years ago and bought a bunch of $1 ugly hats and fleeces. Over the years I've given them out to poor souls I've run across, ill prepared for the weather.
I've preached to my kids to never leave the house unless you're prepared to walk home. Seriously, I've seen kids at the school bus stop in the snow in shorts and sandals because it looks cool. Teachable moments for my kids. My other winter rule is to never have less than a tank of gas, borrow from dad if you need.

I like to keep some water in the vehicles for emergency use, wish I had a way to make it not useless in the winter.

I wear shorts during winter. But, I also wear boots year round. A thermos is a good companion

When the children come home for Thanksgiving, the snow tires go on and DAD makes sure each vehicle is set up to survive a winter squall of the kind that occur near Buffalo or Watertown. An enormous -20F sleeping bag, a real steel shovel, 2 MRE's with heater pacs, bottled water, 10lb. bag of sand, candy,...Cars always have jumper cables , flashlights, a few road flares and hazard markers. All their cars have the Onstar emergency notification, driving direction and phone setup.

It's the bottled water I need a solution for. A case of ice isn't so useful.

I own tons of Thermoses, and 2 in that exact model. They are not cheap, but nothing beats them. Throw 2 of them in the kit and that's a gallon of water that will never freeze. I use them literally every day. I'm drinking ice water from a Tumbler as I type.

I've heard that keeping a candle in your car can actually keep your from freezing to death. The heat will keep the car warm enough with your body heat. Granted theirs probably a limit of how cold it will work.

I always keep a few blankets in my Truck year round, use them more than you would think. I also have a few survival fire starters that never leave the truck, heck one is attached to my keys. Figure if I can stay warm should be able to handle most situations until self rescue, or help arrives.

As always in the rule of 3..Along with my ALICE in y closet, and shoulder bag in my basement, I keep a perfectly stocked BOB in car too, everything from "lifestraw" to 40watt foldable solar panel is in there. Just alittle smaller version of my real BOB.

Good vid. I have a small bag in each car including a 24 hour emergency ration (Walmart sells them for $5/piece and they taste pretty damn good like a shortbread cookie), emergency blankets, some matches, candles, cash. Only one pair of gloves though and no hat. Should probably rectify that.

Looks cool. Apparently burns for two hours.
I made a couple of pop can stoves a few years back and they also burn on that alcohol and they are amazing. Nothing to break, very compact, readily work with camp stove fuel or alcohol.
