Factory 44 mag ammo for 77/44?

I'm putting my 77/44 rig together for deer this coming season. I have some Remington stuff and a bunch of low power reloads for my N frame, but I don't think any of it is a go for this rifle. After reading up a bit, I get a sense that jacketed bullets may not hold up to rifle velocities, 240 grain pills will be fine, and Hornady lever stuff (spitzer tip) have impressive ballistics but iffy performance on deer. This is new ground for me; any experience or thoughts out there? I'm a firm believer in one shot stopping so that rubber tipped Hornady kinda puts me off.

I got nothing for you other than agreeing with you on the rubber tipped bullets.

I use the Hornady rubber tips. They fly great. You need to hit bone for them to work best. Shoulder shots have put a few deer in the pot for me. Lung shots are not as good.

I shoot 240gr JSP in my Marlin 1894 all the time. No jacket problems what so ever. That's a .44 magnum. The same bullets get loaded for my .444 Marlin. No problems there either. For .444 that's 2,400 ft/sec. Hornady JSP, Remmington JSP (ammo). For reloads Hornady, Remmington, Speer.

Buffalobore makes great .44 magnum loads. The old Winchester white box .44 magnum soft point was, maybe still is if available, a great deer round.

I loaded up some Hornady 300gr XTP for bear years ago and tried them out on deer, bang=DRT! The first time I used them I had several doe's running across a field 3 shots and 3 deer down, the last one went the farthest and that was about 40-50 yds, the first and second deer went a couple feet. It's a long bullet so watch the seating depth and use a heavy crimp!

Good info. I bought a bag of 240 jsp from Bullet Guy and next season will load my own. In the meantime I've got a bunch of Remington 240 jsp and jhp I'll burn up for the brass.
