Hey there NY Gun Forum –

Just stopped by the site to show you a slick invention we came up with as another option for FALs/SLRs here in California to comply with our asinine assault weapon laws. Not that familiar with the vagaries of NY’s gun laws, but in order to possess a semi-auto magazine fed rifle here in California, it has to either be registered with the state as an ‘Assault Weapon’ or be in either 'Featureless Configuration' (No "evil features" i.e. pistol grip, flash hider, forward pistol grip, adjustable buttstock) or 'fixed magazine configuration'. For fixed magazine configuration the magazine has to be locked in the rifle in such a manner that it requires breaking of the rifle's action in order to remove it from the rifle. When configured this way we can keep all the other 'evil features' installed on the rifle...

In this vein we came up with a compliance solution for FALs and SLRs here in California - the FALMR (FAL Automatic Locking Magazine Release).

We are gearing up for another production run and wanted to introduce the FALMR here and elsewhere as a possible way to help comply with state regulations. Again I am not that familiar with NY law, and this post is not an endorsement that the FALMR will make your FAL/SLR comply with NY law, just wanted to stop by and show off this nifty device and to advise that we are gearing up for another production run if there is any interest. Who's gonna be the first case law guinea pig? It's the same thing as when I had asked about the AR Maglock/Hyperswitch for the AR platform and got lightly flamed for it

Also in NY it doesnt specify the rifle can be taken down to remove the mag to be legal

my mag is permanently attached to my rifle .. it will stay in it till the end of time if needed .. will never prematurely fall out , even when shooting ..

.. but it does requires another process to remove it ..

Thanks for the feedback all. Sounds like the FALMR might miss the mark with New York law...?.

With the FALMR we recommend top loading the magazine in lieu of removal - this will require the use of a stripper clip top cover. The reason being is the FAL was not designed to have the action broken frequently for magazine reloads, and there is concern over undue wear on the frame lock lug and frame lock, causing a sloppy fit which may affect accuracy. The linked video was just to show that with the action closed, the FALMR cannot pivot far enough forward to release the magazine. There is some slop built into the design so that the inevitable jam can be easily cleared. Best part of the FALMR is that it can quickly be reversed (only with the action open of course) for when out of state.
See below picture of an Imbel on Imbel FAL that demonstrates the use of a stripper clip top cover with the FALMR.

During the development of the FALMR, it was theorized that removal of the pivot pin was was a sneaky way for the Cal DOJ to defeat the FALMR. For LULZ we decided to block off access to the pin by welding the appendage onto the magazine and call in the Coc-block (cover over center).
